| RE: Pls ID this striking original DANISH (?) ARMCHAIR from a valuable house 8 photos | 1 Relevance | 4 years ago | gplanera | Identification | |
| Hi @lexi, thanks for that. I can see zero evidence of a removed tilt mechanism though. Thank-you for the extra info re the designer. From my research online I cannot see a single sold example. Any idea on retail value for this chair - retail equivalent of an eBay sold price i.e. not topped up, not Vinterior or 1st dibs etc? Many thanks, Mark | |||||

| @andersen. did a bit of searching for designs attributed to Eva and Nils Koppel. Found 2 chair designs in this publication. L'Arredamanto Moderno. Robrto Aloi and published by Hoepli.1955. Not your chair but they do share some design elements. Image 1 is from that publication: Image 2 is a more recent photo, from the web, of the other chair. | Thanks very much for your reply, Kyle. After checking out some images for Lübke, I can see the similarities in the shape of the stile/back post as you noted. I just came across this footstool listed on 1st dibs by a dealer in Malmo which is *only attributed* to Bender and Larsen. It is a mirror image of the cane and chair apron set up, only it's in teak. I'll keep searching. Attachment: Screenshot-2021-03-07-at-18.25.37.png | |||||

| @amarfaa They appear legit and in great condition. If anyone suspects otherwise, I'd like to learn why. If buying, I'd offer +/-40% less than current retail price of new and negotiate from there. If selling, I'd ask 20% less than current retail and probably accept +/-35% under. Don't pay attention to 1st dibs. Prices listed there are from fantasy land. Reality is that the chairs are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Otherwise, they're just more used furniture, albeit used "luxury" furniture. | |||||

| Despite not being any good at handling textiles, or having any real desire to attain them I always love seeing pictures of mid century fabric designs. It really was a special era, design wise. I only hope I get to live through another era with the same boom, so far no dice. | |||||

| Frequent lurker, first-time poster. I was wondering if anyone could point me to the designer/origin of this unit. I've tried using the laminate top to the bottom-most modular pieces and the interesting back crossbars as details to match against other units during my research, but so far no dice. Thoughts? http://www.ebay.com/itm/140584610713?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_500wt_1106 | |||||

| ... marked Walnut on 1st dibs. In general...I'm finding mixed information to no information everywhere I look regarding this set and the few similar pieces I found. Every listing claims something different. I'm at about hour 40 researching this set. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to know the truth. I am loving the history of Widdicomb to being bought by Stickley. The set was made in 1963. I've read past auction listings and some "sold" items attribute George Nakashima as the designer. Some attribute Robsjohn-Gibbings, but he was only ... | |||||

| Lief, you can see the tag in cdsilva's link. It gives no manufacturer name. I've consulted with family friends in the N.C. furniture business for years, and they've circulated the chair pictures to all the contacts they can think of, but no dice. We reached out to the furniture library in High Point, and maybe they'll call me one day and tell me they recognized it. Seems unlikely, though. | |||||

| No. But this is one of those recurring questions that makes me think there should be some pseudo-design dice available for ebay sellers to roll... the first die could have six commonly known designer names on it, the second six period style names... so you could just roll it for your "verification" of "Milo Baughman English Regency style" or whatever. Not to be cranky or anything... | |||||
| So, i started working on this | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| So, i started working on this. I sanded it with 60 grit on a pad sander to get the remaining varnish off, but gave up on that when I got to the back where the varnish was mostly intact. I used methylene chloride stripper which seemed to lift the varnish off nicely within ten minutes or so, until I realized there was another coat under that that was unscathed! So i stripped it some more. Ugh. Then I decided to try wood bleach in case it would lighten the grayed parts enough that i wouldn't have to do anymore heavy sanding. I used Savogran crystal wood bleach in a slightly stronger concentration than they recommend---twice---and I got rid of the very lightest graying but there's still a lot left. I also scraped the wood in places and that got ride of some of the grayed material but not all by any means. I mean, not all in the tiny areas that i scraped. It seems to be pretty deep. So here are a few before photos and some detail shots after two applications of bleach on subsequent days (totally rinsed and dried with a towel and 24-hour fan in between)---both wet and dry. I like how it looks dry---except for the gray---and am seriously thinking about doing an soap finish with a little titanium white pigment added in hopes that it will cover the gray a bit. It's not nearly as noticeable when the chair is dry except for a few areas. Of course the grain is horribly raised now and I will still have to sand it for hours and hours and hours and hours. Opinions? Especially on whether a little pigment in the soap will help it cover? I could always do black enamel if soap won't work. | |||||

| Thanks niceguy. Tejo Remy is one of my contemporary design heroes and source of inspiration in terms of making something from nothing or scavenging for others dicarded unwanted stuff. I keep everything in the house mismatched because I never know what's coming in next and you are right the Kaj Frank stuff are wothwhile. We have some of the salad bowls and serving bowls by him from Arabia Finland. Also worthwhile are the enamelled cookware from Norway by Catherine Holm. You know, like you shouldn't wear white after Labour Day, so maybe, you're not supposed to paint your walls in color (other than white), if you have a post-modern clinical room, as shown in the above picture with the Le Corbusiers everywhere. (I dont have Le Corbusiers in this room, but I have the same Kandinsky chair in that photo, and the sofa is pretty close to the LC).
