What's with those crap chairs on the red carpet?
What ever happened to the Kennedy/Nixon Wegners?

i had the same thought.
Bizarre. And no visual connection with the side table.
And the last minute blue wrapped frame in front of Tom Brokaw.

Nashville Restaurant Supply
They look like mass produced restaurant chairs. I think the pedestal tables are actually fern stands.

What's really insane is...
that Highbrow is located in Nashville, and they could've supplied them with a pair of quality stools that are not as butt-ugly as those Target-like stools used in the 'debate'.

Better than
The stools were better than the knock-off Eames aluminum chairs used during the Democratice Primary Debates. Nothing says 'irony' like watching to people talk about how american jobs are being outsourced - while sitting on the product of that outsourcing.
It is true that the stage was SO weird last night. The blue background made both candidates seem like they were preparing for some special effects scene, and Brokaws podium was visually mixing with the red carpet - turning it imperial purple.

Blue
is certainly the favorite color for these political stage sets, isn't it. Makes me pleased, as a Democrat. . .

Now this is My kind of political thread!
Design geeks debating the merits and aesthetics of seating, color and lighting.
I was gob smacked at the stage design not to mention the seating for the audience.
What was the budget for this committee and where did they spend all of that money?

buds
somewhat off topic here, but i saw the cover of the most recent issue of the progressive yesterday at the library. for some silly reason, i find that a bit more disturbing than the chair selection.

It looked to me like the chairs or stools, as it were, came straight from Applebee's. Casual dining, to be sure. Have you tried out our new Surf 'n Turf?

I saw some of the debate...
I saw some of the debate today (in the UK) - perhaps the austere set was felt to be in keeping with these straitened times....not a good times for outward displays of luxury

does austere
does austere necessarily mean bad taste? Seems like even Ikea has some stools that would have been better suited. Speaking of suits: I thought both men made infinitely better tie choices this time around. The first debate had Obama wearing a tie that was trying to be burgundy, but ended up purple, and McCain wearing a black and white striped tie that recalled rugs at Ikea.
