Katy womb chair
I redo lots of chairs and I have seen very few knock offs of the Saarinen Womb chair.
Most chairs that come in do not have the Knoll label, but after 55 long years that is to be expected . but we know they are still knoll quality and made by them .
My guess is that this chair is very difficult to recover so to re mold it back when knock offs were becoming fashionable I would say this was not the most popular cause of the degree of difficulty in reproducing it.
Now go forward 40 years I am sure the Chinese have started to reproduce the chair but i am sure it is not that popular . We get calls at least once a week with some one wanting to recover the chair and I think i scare them off when i tell the price and that it needs 7 yards of fabric, and the shipping to and from to Oklahoma.
we reupholster a lot of vintage pieces
Everyone is always shocked at the price.
But, we do have a good name in town, and we are known to do good work, so people still reupholster their chairs. I get the odd request online for reupholstering quotes, and have yet to get an order for an egg chair, there is always silence when I tell them what it will cost.
I have done a ton of little teak or rosewood occasional and dining chairs, as well as a number of sofas, and one Eames original Lounger and Ottoman, that was a gorgeous chair.
The people who know what they have tend to spend the money to do it right.
old womb
is the chair in need of just being redone are the legs in good shape
if this is the case just wait till you can afford to redo the chair... it is only getting more expensive with age but like i said it is a time consuming and somewhat difficult chair to redo just like the egg chair those two chairs cause of the way they were made take a lot of man hours to redo good luck
Installation
The legs are good, the fiberglass good. The fabric and foam, total write-off. I found it in a barn, a barn with a leaky roof, and I found it right under where the roof leaked, where it leaked for at least a few years.
An "installation".... hmmmm. What if I add a smashed TV in front of it? Incredible social commentary. Vivienne, it'll be our collaboration piece!
