| Love the Eames Desk | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| ... much damage to the desk. Just make sure you don't pop out the top! The only reason I didnt get it was monetary. Instead I found a Offi Wave desk on Craigslist for $100. (pretty, but wobbly as hell) Oh, and definitely get it in primary colors. The ESUs just look so sad and bland in the neutral color schemes. | |||||

| ... lounge goes for $750 and is just a wood frame and cotton webbing. Hell - a shitty 'designer' lounge chair from CB2 costs 500$. I'm also really missing your frame of reference in terms of quality. Because of the material considerations lets set aside the plastic chairs (altho I note that a plastic Ikea bucket chair cost $150 by comparison). But do you have any basis to claim the 670 is less well made now than it ever was? Or, more surprisingly, the aluminum group? In my experience the Alu group are built like battleships. I've got a new (2006) 670 and a ... | |||||

| ... region did better this month comparable to last year. He said the press release is a neccessity: because DWR is not privately held they are required to investigate all offers on the company - something that is fairly commonplace amongst all publicly traded companies. (sadly he did not give me any further details about the deal) I didnt have much time to talk but we did get on to the window shopping. He said he can always tell exactly when someone is going to buy online just by the questions they ask. (funny enough, he said the MOST frustrating are people ... | |||||

The article made good in pointing out that quality and timeless design are essential, but didnt give many real world examples of current products meeting those criteria. As times become tougher I'm starting to lose patience with those complaining about the problem without offering much in the way of solutions.
| No luck | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| No luck I didnt have any luck finding images or descriptions of the Aalto stools through Artek-Pascoe. MoMA has one in their collection given by AP, but the manufacturer is listed as being Finnish. Does anyone have a cataloge if Artek-Pascoe? I'm really quite curious now if the bevel was original or added later. I've not been able to find any photo of a beveled top either. Paulanna - I did find an article from TIME in 1940 announcing the opening of Artek-Pascoe. It talks about how Aalto hoped the US manufacturing would streamline the process and make thi ... | |||||

| Yes But, aside from the Tulip collection, Saarinen's furniture didnt reach nearly the audience that Eames' did. The average person on the street can usually tell you that Eames was a furniture designer. The same person will most likely know Saarinen for architecture. I'm not trying to discredit Saarinen for his furniture, but I dont think it warrants as much attention as his architecture does. His process as an architect, his use of architecture for corporate identity, his focus on the function of each larger space - creating a unity between the micro & t ... | |||||

| And vigilance Seriously - If you want a deal you need to look ALL the time. I once discovered a posting at 11pm on a Saturday night. It popped up simultaneously as I was posting my own used couch. I emailed immediately, got talking with the seller, and she informed me that TWENTY other people had emailed her in the meantime and I needed to come get the chair that night. I did. Now I've got an Evans production DCW. And two weeks later the same woman called me directly because she had found a cache of other Eames pieces and didnt want the hassle of posti ... | |||||
| Go for it! | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Go for it! My chair is black leather, but I bought it second hand and didnt have much say in the matter. But, if you're going to reupholster yours I say go for it. The chair can look brilliant in new clothes! (It can also look awful - I'd do LOTS of tests before you commit) Some things to consider: a) The chair is composed of interlocking curved masses set 90 degrees to each other - sort of the position your hands are in when you clap. The black leather does the best to delineate these masses - but anything will do that as long as it contrasts enough with ... | |||||

| ... actually sat in it I was appalled at the idea of spending (then) $500 on it. Still, I often find guests who sit in the chair tend to perch at the front edge of the seat rather than relaxing back in it. Another funny illustration is the Eames Low Rod base (cat's cradle). I had a side shell on a Cats Cradle base that I didnt really like for anything other than looks. However, a good friend LOVED it. Every time he visited he would seek out the chair and sit in it. At 6'2" he looked remarkably like a grasshopper in it, which contributed to the amusement. | |||||

I would love to own a Nelson vintage clock, but I would want the label to prove it...unless the ball clock design is characteristic of Nelson and the label isnt necessary? If I could be guarnateed it was a Nelson, than I would buy it. The price didnt make it worth taking a chance for me otherwise.
| I did it in photobucket.... | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | glassartist | General discussion | |
| I did it in photobucket.... I did it in photobucket. Once your pic appears in the first place when it uploads, there is reduction options directly under it. I had to upload a second copy because the one in my stockpile had a reduction option, but it didnt work. It seems like reduction only works if it is the first thing I do after I upload an image to photobucket. I suppose I could also do it ahead of time in photoshop (which I did), but it wasn't enough of a reduction. It also helped that I did it first thing, while I was still groggy, or I am sure I would ... | |||||

| I use I have used MinWax's Polyshades in satin for an old coffee table that I accidentally left a water bottle on. I sanded the surface down and gave it two coats. The minwax poly did a good job and water marks didnt show up after that. I'm thinking about the same product for the new coffee table I'm going to be making in the next couple of weeks. Definitely a fan of satin more than gloss - unless the gloss is on a color. | |||||
| Oval | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Oval This coming from a guy who once split a 3/4" glass table with his shin. (surprisingy it didnt hurt THAT much) I like oval tables - as they are friendlier on the lower legs. An oval Saarninen in marble? I also really like the Florence Knoll coffee tables in marble - altho I would invest in a pair of shinpads. Also, Barry, you might think of something anonymous. A beautiful danish wood table. You've already got some superstars present, maybe let the table step aside and give the limelight to the couch and end tables. | |||||
| Comfort is subjective | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | LuciferSum | General discussion | |
| Comfort is subjective I popped into Vessel in Boston to try one of these out earlier in the summer. Unfortunately it was gay-pride and I was a wee bit tipsy - but I recall the chair as being comfortable enough as a side chair. That is - it didnt scream "ouch" when I sat down. Agree with the chair focusing on function first, aesthetics second. In many ways thats why I really like Grcic's work. It almost always puts aesthetics in a second place to function - which is why the forms seem shocking and new. But because the function works properly we are able ... | |||||
