| Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! My bad AGAIN! I didn't scroll mgee76's pic to see the wood armrest cap on the right end. My sofa is a 2408s- NOT like the one in mgee76's example. I'll shut up now... DM | |||||

| @Starline-"Experimental" is... @Starline- "Experimental" is the key word here. As I said, there were some interesting things, but they were often experimental/boutique/museum-y type things. You didn't see it in a lot of homes. For one thing, it wasn't especially liveable. Some of the chairs from that era look like they were designed by an executioner in his off hours. On the low end, you might have seen "the look" in a lot of homes-especially when Miami Vice became really popular. But often "the look" pastel chairs and chrome, was made in China and I can't i ... | |||||

| ... I've seen a couple of doozies online: silky florals and a few velour(ish) fabrics. It's. Just. Too. Much to take. I love your idea of bright. Yellow or orange come to mind for me. Seems a lot of people love the turquoise. I saw a photo of a woman sitting in the chair - I didn't realize they're that large in scale. In the room setting, they look cool. Good luck! | |||||

| sophia, It's interesting you should bring up your sister's firm's redecoration. I don't know how creditable it is, but about 1.5 months ago dezeen had a blog post predicting Memphis's return. The combination of furnishings you mention is also interesting. didn't Ettore Sottsass basically say that one only needed a few pieces of Memphis to set off a room, and that an interior furnished fully in Memphis would be overwhelming? http://www.dezeen.com/2014/04/13/the-return-of-memphis/ | |||||
| It has the look of a sewing machine | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| It has the look of a sewing machine table, sort of---the top is the right size, the opening is about the right size, but there's no reason for the opening to be that shape. In fact, it wouldn't physically support a sewing machine if it didn't have all 90º angles. The cutout looks kind of homemade from the underside. I wonder if someone hacked a commercially-made table into a vanity/jewelry display case? I don't know. Not a sewing machine table, though. The tiled table looks homemade. Are the chairs comfortable? | |||||
| Doesn't sound original | 1 Relevance | 12 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| Doesn't sound original to me, but who knows. Could you post a closeup of the seat material and one of the underside of the rails? Peoples' memories aren't terribly reliable. Maybe the first owner had a cat who destroyed the seats early on and they were redone with something the cat couldn't wreck. And then the person from whom you purchased the chairs had forgotten this since it was so long ago, or didn't know about it. That's one explanation I can think of, if the material isn't original. | |||||

| ... that beginning around the 80's good design was often sold as art. I didn't see a lot of people living every day with anything we'd consider owning from that era. The things everyone had in their home and were sold in mainstream stores, is not EVER going to be collected. I'm talking about spotted oak pieces. It's a lot different than the every day stuff from the 50's/60's/70's which we find of interesting now either because of quality or design. Not coincidentally, the late 70's is when the good american manufacturers like Heywood closed because they couldn' ... | |||||

| I am not sure what you're ask... I am not sure what you're asking. Since you didn't tell us the price you were asking, I can only assume it was too high. All the prices you see on-line are retail. A lot of those people sit on those "valuable" items for years and years. If you're selling it on CL, you're basically looking for a buyers that is willing to spend 3 grand for upholstery, their time and effort plus whatever you're asking. In my opinion, you won't find that on CL. At the end of the day, it's just stuff. If you're spending that much mental energy on ... | |||||

| I can't tell you who designed... I can't tell you who designed them, but I saw a set of these sold with a solid teak dining table by Povl dinesen and a Vodder bow tie pull sideboard with dinesen china cabinet atop it. Doesn't prove anything, but I'd bet they are late 50s or early 60s from the association. Of course their design year could be much earlier, for all I know. I'd never seen these chairs before, and they had lost their tags, so I didn't know they were FH product, but I still remember them because I liked them so much. | |||||

| ... that's what others have labelled through some searching online. So really, I didn't even know where these things were made until just a couple of months ago. I only have a little bit of information on the table and that the set was purchased over 30 years ago for about $30,000 CAD on special. So any information regarding designers and makers of these items would be very much appreciated. Thanks! | |||||

| Yeah, I agree not original.... Yeah, I agree not original. didn't clarify that in the previous post. I believe the white fabric visible on the right side is a separately stapled underlayer and not the original upholstery, as it looks to be a loose weave and low thread count on close inspection. Is that standard for leather seats to separate it from the foam or to contour the foam before applying the leather? | |||||
