| It's not the worst thing in | 2 Relevance | 10 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| It's not the worst thing in the world, and when they're tucked under the table or when you're sitting on them you won't be able to see it! I've lived with worse. It's amazing how quickly and completely you forget about something like that once a little time has passed. Maybe this story will make you feel better. Years ago when I was still kind of new to upholstering, I got a great 60s sofa to redo for myself. At that time it was still pretty hard to find really good quality MCM fabrics at a discount and I could not afford to pay full price. I settled for a neutral chenille in the local fabric store. Mistake #1. I didn't have a pneumatic stapler and compressor at the time and was still using tacks and a tack hammer---which, nothing wrong with that but it does add a LOT of time. I decided to take some other shortcuts to make up for it, one of which was not doing boxing or welt on the cushions. Mistake #2. I also restyled the arms because they had a very contrived look---which turned out ok but I overpadded them a bit and they just looked sloppy, or something. Mistake #3. The chenille turned out to be cheap quality, I think mostly polyester, which started feeling rough and icky after awhile. Also, I got sick of the color pretty quick (a tweedy brown...sort of). But I couldn't face redoing it so soon after dealing with all that tacking, not to mention the time it takes to strip down an entire sofa frame, so I gave it to a friend to use in his music studio. Good riddance. Fast forward about ten years, past a few other reupholstered vintage sofas, all of them done better than that first one but none of them quite as comfortable. My friend said he was gonna get rid of the sofa and asked if i wanted it back---i said YES! Because by then the upholstery was 15 years old which is a reasonable time to redo it anyway! I got some beautiful wool fabric by Sina Pearson and reupholstered it the right way, including the arms, and with welted box cushions, and I love it and am sitting on it right now. The end. | |||||
| Are we talking about the same thing? | 2 Relevance | 14 years ago | Pegboard Modern | General discussion | |
| Are we talking about the same thing? ... when we assess "comfort"? No, it's not the kind of sofa you curl up on to read a book or even sprawl out on while watching a movie. It was not designed for that purpose. I mean, duhh... there are not even arms on the sofa and they did not have home video players when it was designed. However, to sit in upright I think the sofa is very comfortable. This is due in large part to the high back and the lumbar support offered by the angle of the lower back. The seat is rather shallow as the overall depth is quite shallow by most sofa standards. This fact, and the fact that it folded down and the legs come off for economical shipping is why it is named the "sofa compact". At some point (I'm thinking in the 1970s) Herman Miller made two changes. They changed from phillips screws to one-way screws to fix the back in the upright position (too many people had pinched their fingers at the hinge in the back) and they added a center support under the seat. This center support is the single detail that differentiates vintage production. Actually, there is one more very small detail, but most people don't want you unscrewing the seat backs on their sofa to see if it's early production. As for comfort, I have personally lived with a sofa compact and found it very comfortable. I know everyone has different preferences and different body shapes. The best way would be to just try one yourself. Many sofa designs that a lot of people hold in high regard I find to be unpleasant at best, a torture rack at worst. Flat seats with no pitch, low backs that are perpendicular to the seat, no lumbar support, seats that are too shallow or too deep... I have seen far too many sofa designs that shoot for high style and have no consideration for comfort or use. Regarding vintage or new, I'm always going to vote vintage. It's the green choice, it has some history, and you can almost always buy a vintage sofa compact for less than a new one, even if you have to budget for reupholstery. | |||||

| Regarding Craigslist | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | dashes | General discussion | |
| Regarding Craigslist I tend to agree that CL is the place for buyers, not sellers. I find it's best for just giving stuff away. I'm not sure why this is though. In the case of this recently aquired Plycraft chair, CL is exactly where I found it, so I just can't see how I could relist it there for a much higher price. | |||||

| Ingo Maurer (esque?) table lamp/sconce thing. slightly confused... | 2 Relevance | 16 years ago | brbeard | General discussion | |
| So I picked this lamp up on my trip home yesterday. I bought it because I thought it was fun and poppy and cheap :). I'm slightly confused by the design however... I knew nothing of Ingo Maurer before I bought this lamp, but it appears that oversized bulb lamps and Maurer go hand in hand. If this is a rip of his style, then it's a high quality one. Milk glass shade and all metal construction. I couldn't find any markings on this thing, so I have no idea who manufactured it. I've seen a few that are of the same construction (same bulb base design and same cords), but they're all hanging pendants, and don't have this bizarre cage-like sculpture surrounding the bulb. Anyone have any theories as to what purpose that could serve? There's a plate on the back that could potentially be used to hang it and the lower back leg, which is a different shape than the others would help the bulb stay parallel to a wall if used as a sconce (but then what would you need the other three legs for). If anyone has any insight regarding what this structure could be intended for, I'd love to hear it! And if anyone knows of this version of the lamp, whether it's actually tied to Maurer or whether it's simply an "inspired by" designed by an unknown, etc, I'd love to hear that as well. Thanks! | |||||

| Haven’t posted on here in forever but thought this latest thing I acquired was worthy! Market place find that I somehow didn’t have to compete for, saw it, sent the money and it was marked sold. Then the stress of waiting to get it wondering if someone would swoop in and ruin my day but it was meant to be! | George Nelson Platform Bench real or not? | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | jbnickovich | General discussion | |
| I recently aquired a nelson slat bench from an estate sale. It does not have the foil tag, but I believe it to be authentic. It has small dowels on the under side of the platform holding the finger joints together. Any information would be helpful. Also should I refinish this since 95% of the original clear coat is gone? I didnt know if it would deminish the value or make it more valuable. I am able to send photos to anyone who knows these benches well. Thanks! | |||||
| Herman Miller table | 2 Relevance | 12 years ago | heavymetalsculpture | Identification | |
| I recently aquired this Herman Miller table and I've been unable to find out anything about it. It is peaked in the middle and slants down on both sides. I'm guessing its a drawing table? It has two Action Office stickers. When was this produced and who is the designer? What is this thing called? http://d1t1u890k7d3ys.cloudfront.net/cdn/farfuture/GiOuwoZm8DeXEMZT7-UukPgbgAnNNxSDg7yZLbu8u1E/mtime:1487901673/sites/default/files/forum/hermanmillertable2.jp g" /> | |||||

| It can seem kitsch in the... It can seem kitsch in the average home but so can a Picasso. Regardless how good a piece you have it looks like nothing if the rest of your home or room is not done properly. I will take the designer ladies interior any day over a bland room with cheap teak retro whatever it's called. Then again maybe it's an aquired taste so that means some people will just have to look at more. | |||||
