| ... on the level of manufacturing required. That is to say, you tie a knot like that with your hands: Making it rudimentary. You make a laminated plate like that with an expensive piece of machinery, partly to help automate an otherwise very tough (impossible, maybe) task on a large scale: Not rudimentary. And that's the dichotomy in this piece I am pointing out which makes me think it's not original. I am also fully ready to be wrong. It was just my thought process. But I wanted to clarify I did not mean rudimentary as a sleight against the leatherwork, just t ... | |||||

| This handsome map of the Great Lakes region was created by Stephen Frykholm for the 1978 campaign of dick Vanderveen for United States Senate. It is very similar in quality of production and style to his popular picnic posters for Herman Miller. I think this poster is pretty scarce and there isn't much about it on the internet so I figured I'd post it here. This particular example is signed by both Stephen Frykholm and dick Vanderveen.A high quality image of the design can be seen here... https://collection.cooperhewitt ... | |||||
| Modernism as Motif for Alienation in Film (and society?) | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | dcwilson | General discussion | |
| I just re-watched an old Schwarzenegger film by Paul Verhoeven called Total Recall, based on a wonderfully paranoid burlesque short story by Philip K. dick called "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." Total Recall reminded me how frequently film makers use modernist design to represent heartless, alienating rationality run amok. Alfred Hitchcock was one of the first directors I recognized doing this and he later said in an interview that he often used modernist form language to depict highly rational environments that triggered alienation. Hitchcock often ... | |||||

| The cushion does have a few wear spots and it has velcro tape on the bottom and velcro an the wood top of the seat to keep the cushion in place. I am guessing that is what you are seeing...Does anyone know anything about dick Wickman...is he still alive. By Googling his name I did come up with a studio in Madison Wisconsin, but no website, only an address and phone number..I would like to know more about this piece...... | |||||

| That's a pretty chair but is there something going on with the seat or is that just the photograph? dick Wickman has nice furniture but I find his use of antlers and mother of pearl offensive. I'd hold onto the chair if for no other reason than potential future collectability. Should be interesting. Contact the Racine Art Museum for information. | |||||

| So much for going off topic… So we wait for Lunchbox's list…. and woody's monkey painting… Remember when Paul Lynde ( of Hollywood Squares center square fame) played a nervous driving instructor with a crash helmet on a "Bewitched" episode? I do. He had to eat a "nerve cookie" to calm himself down during driver training sessions. Rose Marie was on dick Van Dyke. At least that show was in black and white. Black and white is more abstract. I like it. For a minute I thought Mark's photo of her was a Chicken George painting. | |||||

| how does one respond to (sigh)? Yes, well when the thread topic turns from trying to impress each other with our dumpster dives and becomes one of how cool guns are and which guns are in our arsenals as if they were Eames chairs, then you might figure it would attract some negative responses on a forum dedicated to design. Hunter S. Thompson is a good example of just how "cool" firearms are - he shares with dick Cheney the distinction of being yet another NRA member who has (mistakenly) shot a friend full of buckshot while out on a hunting trip. It has a bad case of the spots (Spotted dick?), and will be re-donated after one wearing... Fondly, Aunt Mark ps the weird thing is that I think that I was the person who donated the piece to begin with...I think???? I sorta remember it. I need shock therapy. Very odd. | |||||

| tinyarmada, I've read the... tinyarmada, I've read the thread just fine. It seems your only complaints are that he seems to price his items high, doesnt provide a plethora of accompanying photos for his listings and is persistent. Sounds like every dealer I've ever known, except for the fact that he seems to be relatively young and successful enough to score a television show. I don't know, maybe the guy is a complete dick, but this thread sounds more like a case of dealer envy. | |||||
| If we are lucky | 1 Relevance | 15 years ago | glassartist | General discussion | |
| If we are lucky this will be the end of my definitional rants. I would be very happy if the term "artisan" did not exist. Or as dick Cheney put it on an entirely different subject, "reduce it to a size that we could drown in a bath tub". As I see it, it only exists to co-opt the misguided perception of art as somehow better than craft or design to unnecessarily bolster the other two. "artisan Bread" comes to mind. Terms like this make it very difficult for people in general to understand what an artist's job is, and why that job actually matters in this worl ... | |||||
