And your Category 3, which I'll call Geometric Abstraction, bears your own example of the case of Islamic artists avoiding the wrath of a religious order by working in geometric forms--a fairly persuasive anecdotal example of the Worringe ... | |||||

| RE: Early milo baughman recliner?? James inc. | 1 Relevance | 3 years ago | therye | General discussion | |
| @dmjimerson Without pictures here to go off of it is difficult to tell exactly what recliner you are talking about. The James Inc/Thayer Coggin thing is quite a bit more dicey than how TC generally tells it. James was first, no doubt, James focused on selling to a lower end clientele and mostly only sold lounge seating. The association with Milo started in 1954, and shortly after that the Thayer Coggin brand was started because Milo thought it sounded more exotic (according to Thayer talking about it later). Supposedly TC focused on a little higher en ... | |||||

| Paint on dichloromethane (I use Paramose) liberally and leave for 24 hours. repeat for one or two days. Should start to bubble. Then put on a fresh coat and while its still wet scrape off as much as you can with a scraper. Then another liberal coat, wait 30 mins , wet it again with stripper, and then go at it with extra course steel wool. You'll get it all off no problem. Use gloves and proper mask with correct filters especially if doing it often as dichlo is toxic . It's only sold to trade so... | |||||
| Rustin indicates Strypit as | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | tktoo | General discussion | |
| Rustin indicates Strypit as dichloromethane (methylene chloride)-free. Try using a product that contains this chemical and follow safety guidelines as per instructions. If, after stripping thoroughly, water stains persist, treat with oxalic acid before staining. Also, the grain of oak will often accept stain unevenly due to the difference in porosity/density/hardness between the "early" and "late" wood of its annular ring structure. It is possible to burnish or "glaze" the harder late wood by over-sanding with too fine a grit. I'd recommend not using steel w ... | |||||

| Expensive - Cheap I love dichotomies. Hi Brent! How are you?! You know...your images of the ,,low-priced hotel,, lamps, recall me more the suppose "expensive hotel". I was searching to post images of "expensive hotels", and so so many ,,bad taste,, so much options, that didn?t know which one to choose. I wonder which is exactly the trend that must be stop? I don't know why I imagine those lamps in http://www.lordssouthbeach.com (via James > via www.whatisjameswearing.com > via Mark > via Robert1960) (Thanks, best DA thread ever) By the way here it's suppose ... | |||||

| ... with a single block, always remain a series of blocks connected mechanically. Frankly, they look more like schematics of buildings than the schematics themselves. This tendency no doubt reveals a man pursuing a vision with determination and skill, but visions are not necessarily successful architectural unities, as Frank Gehry's work reveals from time to time today. Second, all artists in all media work with opposites, dichotomies and various grades of difference, as the materials of their media permit. The quickest way in fiction to get a strong effect fro ... | |||||

| Wrong thinking. Don't be trapped into believing that you must choose one or the other. "Form or Function?" is a false dichotomy, like "Red or Heavy?" or "Smooth or Large?". For proof, see the huge number of items that are both lovely AND functional. | |||||

| ... at the Glass House and says, "Wow, did this guy solve the problem of interior space programming, or what?" No one considers the Glass House a ground breaking tour de force of altering the cost-benefit model of housing. No one really even looks at the Glass House as an iconic form, because it isn't. Its massing is in fact rather conventional to the eye. I've seen a million ranches before and after it with building foot prints and wall heights not that disimilar. Even the landscaping that is so beautifully done (at least in its maturity) could just as effecti ... | |||||

| If you want to study mid century modern form language and aesthetics, this has to be the mother lode for your research. In looking at these transistor radios, I note once again two distinct strands of mid century modern form language and aesthetics. One was full of joy and color and exhuberance like the Silvertone radio below. It corresponds to the same form language one found in 50s and early 60s Detroit cars and in American pleasure craft. The other strand was the more somber, humorless, rational international style. I am not surprised by the dichotomy of ... | |||||

| Another thought on the Padre Pio Pilgrammage Church... I have never seen a building that is as understated and quasi inconspicuous on the outside and as impossibly brilliant on the inside. It expresses something more profound about the real dichotomy between a truly religious person's outward calm and the extravagant structure of his inner world of faith than John Pawson's cliched revival can ever even hint at. Yep, I'm still not persuaded by Pawson's monastery. 🙂 And add another feather in Renzo's cap. | |||||
