| Yes, there is a way to make links clickable. One, anyway. Copy and paste it to the 'associated web link' below the message field, like I'm about to do. (People can view the other photos of the table once they get to that dibs page.) http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/tables/tables/jens-risom-walnut-extenda... | |||||

| I've just done a bit of... I've just done a bit of sleuthing and have seen a very similar set of tables attributed to Peter Hvidt, which surprised me. I really don't think this can be the case (not least because it was a 1st dibs dealer). Can anyone else shed light on this? | |||||

| re: refindesignes Honestly, he/she is not charging what some others are and far less than dealers on 1st dibs. My only problem with the seller is that he/she paints the lamps and states they are original. It is not hard to determine as 1. If you are one who collects similar lamps you have seen the lamps sell on eBay by other sellers and reappear on his/her site re-painted and 2. Unless these are old new stock I cant see how someone can think that a scratch/nick would not be present after 60 years or so. Does pretty well for themselves via Ebay it seems. | |||||

| Beautiful desk The Nelson swag leg desk is an exceptional design. I think the visual lightness would make it perfect for use in a bedroom like you are describing. Though they are quite close, there are material differences in the new production when compared to vintage desks, the most obvious being the quality of the white laminate surfaces. I'd suggest inspecting both in person if possible. If you want a vintage desk at the best price I would suggest trying to be patient and waiting for one to come up at auction. Looking at auction results just at Wright, ... | |||||

| ... It was ridiculous. Estate sellers in the Denver area are operating like little shops now. One day of 1st dibs pricing you stupidly stand in line for hours for. I've all but given up on most estate sales unless it's something I really want and know I'm going to pay top dollar for. And yes...saturation. Let's face it. Most people aren't design snobs. They aren't going to sit on these forums and learn the details of the various points of Eames shell chairs. They just want the look and they'll probably get it from the first place they can now - Crate and Barrel ... | |||||

| ... IT IS NOT EASY. I am no expert, but I agree with everything said so far. I believe most people here, including me, are self thought. To my knowledge there is no class or course you can take. Maybe in fancy design schools they have some history of design classes, but I am not to certain on that...Regardless, no class or course can teach you everything about all these furniture, light, ceramics, glass, that we see on here everyday. I like italian lighting and swedish Rorstrand for example...x likes and is a connoiseur of danish ceramics , y is an expert on ea ... | |||||

| refinish I really can't answer as to "lost value" when restoring but I will tell you that many of the 1st dibs sellers repaint lamps (they note this in their descriptions). The white/off white lamp you posted would look much better with a nice paint job and polishing of the frame. | |||||

| attribution license I've noticed a lot of that on 1st dibs. The small eclipse lamp (1972 Lightolier) was attributed twice, two different dealers, to Joe Colombo. A pair of Kovacks floor lamps, attributed to Sonneman. Hey, these guys are trying to sell their wares at ridiculous prices, so they need to attribute everything to somebody. | |||||
| Hmm. You'll be paying an upholsterer | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| Hmm. You'll be paying an upholsterer probably a minimum of $250 per chair for labor and new padding, possibly up to $500 or more each. Add fabric to that, at least 6 yards total at at least $30 per yard for something good but discounted (up to $50-60 or more per yard at full price). I don't know what Pearsall chairs go for on the real market (not dibs) but for the construction quality, that is a lot of money to invest. These also have odd proportions, which is another characteristic of Pearsall furniture. I like their solid walnut bases but then they go ... | |||||

| Globes on Amazon I recently picked up a pair of Sonneman lollipop lamps, minus the globes. I found replacement acrylic globes on Amazon (they're available in a number of sizes) for around $15 each. Now originally these lamps might have had glass globes. Who knows. But the ones of 1st dibs and other high end retailers have acrylic. Hope this helps. | |||||

I love to peruse the design index, 1st dibs, Lauritz, Architonic etc. basically any place that has hi-resolution imagery and moderately reliable attribution (so I don't spend much time on ebay). Punch Borge Mogensen, Hans Wegner, Eames, Moller into 1st dibs and see what comes up. See what doesn't come up. If a manufacturer is listed see if they have a website. Read about their history. etc. etc. It's not instant, but over time you accumulate the knowledge you're looking for. And - best of all -when yo ... | |||||

| ... COMPARED TO antiques. Estate sellers have a hard time selling antique bedroom sets for $100 and even on last days they often aren't going for half price. Most of the problem is that it's "not fun" anymore for a couple of reasons- Mid century decorating and collecting drew a lot of people in when prices were low and things could be had for 20 bucks-the industry garnered a lot of new collectors when they could enter at that price point. Once they caught the bug, they'd escalate their buying and refine their collections with nicer things as time went on. Now t ... | |||||

| Wow That is remarkable. That's the problem with these new knock offs. Some are so close dimensionally that someone without a lot of experience can easily be deceived. These things are appearing in the secondary market now in auctions like the one you linked to and like this one: http://www.ragoarts.com/lot/561805 Dealers on 1st dibs have even listed some. These #45 knock-offs were posted recently: http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/seating/club-chairs/marvelous-pair-finn... In my opinion this is a terrible development. It undermines the authentic vintage examp ... | |||||

| I find it interesting.. i find it interesting... that the 1stdibs example shows brass accents on the legs while the other one does not. I was under the impression this was more of an "american" design element. judging by the chair you found it looks like it would have come without those brass pieces (as Im sure you didnt remove them). any one have any insights, maybe the 1st dibs sofas legs were replaced? | |||||

| I don't know but I wouldn't t... I don't know but I wouldn't trust the attribution just because it's 1st dibs. I've seen some things on there that are wrong. I'm assuming the seller is saying that because it's got a Raymor sticker on it. But Bitossi was a pottery factory as far as I know. Raymor imported lots of home decor items from Europe. You should just write to the seller and ask, but my guess is you won't hear back from them. | |||||
