| knock-offs for bertoias are... knock-offs for bertoias are rare, generally speaking, and i've never seen a knock off of the large diamond chair. i think it would be cumbersome to produce and would fetch a relatively low price (unlike barcelonas etc) as posted above, i too have seen knock offs of the small one with the double end (like the eames wire side chairs). here in the states, these are available at white on white (NYC) and thats about it, again, not too commong. unless there are suppliers in the UK that carry these (or carried these) as knock offs...i ... | |||||

The knock offs commonly have the rods welded to the underside of the frame and can therefore afford to be a bit rougher. also some of the knock off diamond chairs have a double steel frame on the outer edge one above and one below the rods forming a sandwhich around the whole construction. Other than that I'm not really sure!

| Are you ever happy? | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | whitespike | General discussion | |
| No matter what you get, or how much you like it, there's always more. And there is only so much room in your house. What do you do? Practice restraint? Buy and sell in cycles? That matching set of diamonds are cool, but wouldn't a pair of Knoll armless club chairs look nice there? A bIrd where your 670 is? | |||||

| ... there a few times and found some of their pieces to be absolutely awful, while some looked pretty good. the panton chair that they make is ugly and badly done, as are the eames fiberglass chairs (as stated above), their aluminum group chairs are good, but their bases are standard chair bases which look pretty bad. their bertoia diamond chairs are very good, but have a double wire around the edge, like the eames wire side chairs. their corbusier couches range, since they offer different makes of it, and some have paper thin leather that will probably not las ... | |||||

I realise that the production runs of Niels Vodder were Teak and Rosewood though I think I have seen a Walnut version or a similar hardwood of some of the armchairs and agree that you cannot get the same definition with oak. Obviously Wegner was in a sense more accomplished in working across a range of woods for a series of different manufacturers and clients. As to the condition of the chairs. I am certain that the 'China Chairs' have been reupholstered as ...

| Thanks mgee, I feel the same way. Picking this up kinda ruined me. We paid a little over 100USD for it, and I searched high and low, unsuccessfully, for a deals like this since. I guess that is part of the fun collecting mid-century designs, scouring the rough for the diamonds .... I just wish I knew more about it, have been coming up blank in my searches for years now... Stay tuned, I will do an exhaustive photo documentation of the piece by this weekend, with good light, a less busy background, and a better camera than my iphone. | |||||

| It was redone, and not very well, sadly. There are lots of little tucks and creases where they shouldn't be, and the tufting wasnt done in the right pattern--it should form diamonds, not rectangles, between the buttons. Pass. | |||||

| I haven't had time to research but I figured I'd post some finds from this weekend. The tall desk is my favorite, I can't find any marks on it but its very sturdy. The glass looks like a showcase, or place to put big expensive diamonds! It has a backlight and some very old wiring. It appears to be butcher block, I don't think its maple. possibly teak or walnut. something makes me think its french but I could be wrong, either way this will be tough to identify. any ideas for keywords? The chairs I've seen before but I forget the designer. (Vamo Sonderborg fo ... | |||||
| eames lar (cradle base) + original girard fabric | 1 Relevance | 14 years ago | bj | General discussion | |
| Today I went to house up for sale. Inside were some true diamonds, several modernistic ceramics for instance. But what really catched my eye were these two eames shell chairs. Shells are parchement, the base is a cat's cradle (chrome) and the upholstery seems an Alexander Girard design, consisting of egg-yellow and vanilla triangles. All original and bought early sixties in Brussels (maybe Herman Miller had a store back then?). I rarely see eames designed furniture come up here in belgium, so these are quite the find. The man is willing to part with it, but ... | |||||

| ... Why not just buy something else that IS original that you CAN afford? There's no shame in it really. There are several classic modern pieces you can get on the cheap used any day: shell chairs, Saarinen executive chairs, Bertoia diamonds, etc. Today I realized that I have never paid over 600 bucks for anything, and I have quite a bit of nice vintage designer furniture. If you want it bad enough, for the right reasons, you'll find it. I know I am preaching to the choir as they say. Happy Holidays and thanks for listening to my rant, however repetitive the ... | |||||
