We have four Moller 71 chairs. All are in very good condition, but my spouse is unhappy with the “leatherette” seats, and is looking to have them redone in new leather. Our first quote was $600/each which seems a lot – but I’m not sure what range we should expect for this type of work.
NOTE: That quote included tax and materials
@bwsea Where I come from, reupholstering a chair is way cheaper. I remember paying 200 Euro for chairs with an upholstered seat and backrest. But that's Europe, so this info probably won't help you. And: I only know about fabric, not leather. Maybe that's what makes it expensive?
"People buy a chair, and they don't really care who designed it." (Arne Jacobsen)
I was completely unaware that these chairs were available in vinyl upholstery!
My thoughts on reupholstery cost quote are that the devil lives in details. New or tightened strapping? New padding? New quality leather, new dust covers, expert handwork reflective of original techniques and materials, etc.?
Make certain that you and the craftsperson agree as to expectations. It's not always obvious what goes into seemingly simple jobs like these. But, IME, quality work is nearly always worth the investment over the long term ...if you are fortunate enough to even find someone capable!
Agree with tktoo, only the material cover cost can vary $20-200 per chair, depends what quality you like, real or artificial leather etc. Same with labour costs.
My feeling is that you should be able to find something for half that price per chair.
I am a dealer and pay around $200 per chair for such a job here in Germany at my regular reupholsterer.
On the other hand your covers look still good, if you just give it to a upholstery cleaner, which apply some leather care products the covers can look like new and don't need to be redone.
