John Singer Sargent watercolor sketches
Thanks very much jesgord, SDR and waffle.
Two watercolor sketches by John Singer Sargent, c. 1905.
The first below, apparently of a dozing cleric, is 14 3/4 X 19 1/8 inches, with a Canson & Montgolfier embossed mark along the top edge.
The third below, of a woman drawing or painting, is 13 X 18 1/2 inches, with an Old Mora Mill embossed mark in the upper right hand corner.
Sargent traveled extensively in Europe, most famously in Italy, with a small group of friends, some of whom were also painters.
His painting in this period was prolific, sometimes described as almost compulsive- he painted everywhere he went, almost constantly, and it has been said that he was one of very few who could "draw with a brush."
Like most of his watercolor sketches of this period, these are not signed, and they appear to be unfinished. But expert curators at two museums in the US have examined these paintings in person and are convinced that they are indeed by the hand of John Singer Sargent.
Louis Vuitton counts
Mark,
At least I think that Louis Vuitton counts in this posting.
Your suitcases appear to be the "old school" units by the The French Luggage Company (a US company). They manufactured bags under a special license from Louis Vuitton from around 1976 through 1991 (I knew these pieces to be available through Neiman-Marcus and Sakes Fifth Avenue). Very nice collection.
My personal poison is the Epi series in the "electric" blues and "screaming" reds (I am glad to get any color as a gift - hence the yellow with purple interior stud case I received and use). The first editon Stephen Sprouse and Takashi Murakami pieces are just too cool.
I liked Bottega Veneta's old tag line: When Your Own Initials Are Enough.
Please keep posting your Gold & Wood, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and other "high end" treasures.
Someone once told me the Louis Vuitton "hard side" suitcase were too heavy to which I replied that for $5.00 a bag the porter and/or doorman would carry anything.
Why you are correct, niceguy.
I purchased most of the "hard-sided" luggage (including a trunk, and a small liquor cabinet..not shown) in 1991 from the Neiman Marcus store on Worth Ave. The "soft sided" luggage (including a pet carrier for Mr Chopper, and garment bags..not shown ) are from the Vuitton store on Worth Ave, circa 2000. It's probably a bit pretentious, but it does hold up to airline abuse very well. Most of the pieces come with a cloth covering, which helps protect them from sloppy baggage handlers. And like yourself, I prefer to travel first class.
Why not???
ps what lovely works of art JLL.
Hi vangiles!
We have some similar taste buds in our collecting of Knoll pieces...but you have much nicer examples.
best,
Old Mark
ps. I have 2 matching barc's, 2 (distressed) ottomans, and 8 tan Bruno flat bars. Most pieces are in moth-balls...but I know I'll use 'em one day. Maybe not.
