Should I remove the paint?
I picked this up for $5 but someone thought it they needed to paint the whole thing black. Luckily they didn't paint the very bottom. You can still see the wood grain through the black stain. The paint on the wire base is flaking off so that should be easy.
Red LTR's
Tyler,
I bought two LTR's, with the same early label, which had been painted red. I could see the tops were in rough condition underneath, but figured I would still prefer two original examples with patina, than the bright red tables I had.
I used Citristrip to remove the paint, which was fairly easy to do, and found something which I believe must be very rare; both tables appear to have had aniline red finish originally. At first I thought it must be remains from the top coat of paint, but then noticed the tone of color was different from the red paint. Also, the veneer had those dark strands running through it, which can be seen on some of the early aniline red Eames plywood pieces, which makes me believe they were indeed red originally.
Both my tables were in rough condition, as I had suspected. One has a veneer loss at the edge, the other has a worn area in the middle of the top, which goes right through the veneer... Still, I'm happier with the worn look, than the painted red.
