hello! i recently stumbled upon this forum while researching a partial chair ive had sitting around for years. cant recall where i got it. anyways, i’ve been trying to figure out if it’s worth trying to sell. it’s a eames herman miller arm shell chair or whatever you wanna call it. however, it has a gash in it and no legs etc. somewhat rough shape but still a super nice chair. can people repair a gash in old fiberglass?
Depends on the age of the chair and the color. Also how bad the gash is. Fiberglass can bill filled but it will never be perfect, old rough chairs can be sanded and then restore the finish to it. The base is not a problem as they were meant to go with any number of bases which you can get old or new or reproduction. All of these things including if the shock mounts need replacing (probably) all cost money, so is it worth it? Depends... I sold some 70's shells in so-so condition recently for $100 each, I kept one shell that was from the 50's that I will restore myself.
ok cool! good info. i really appreciate it. i tried uploading photos here to go with my post but the files are too big. i put it up for a no reserve auction on ebay so hopefully i can get something for it. it’s a (i think) 68-78 orange red armshell. i can post the link to the auction if that’s acceptable for the pictures
If you take good photos of the chair showing condition, labels/markings, details, etc, and include basic info in the listing "Eames" "Herman Miller" "fiberglass" "shell" etc, then the results of a 7-day auction on eBay will be a good indication of what the value is.
