An
American expression ? "Dibs" means choice by acclamation, as in "I called it" or I spoke first for it. A person can claim the right to that for which he or she has first spoken up. . .
What is your expression for this ?

SDR, maybe "author rights"? ...
SDR, maybe "author rights"?
but it's more formal or official...
my mum says that "first dibs" is like if you say "i said that first when nobody else had thought of saying it". It’s said either jokingly or spitefully.
paulanna, the designer can help you match pieces of furniture by giving you hints on many aspects of them like history, material, colour theory, etc. Also they can give you examples of interiors that are suitable for your furniture, or the other way round. It's creative and nice to work with a designer. My parents have just had a designer in our house, and I really likes the work he's done.

I'm English and have always understood 1st dibs to mean a) an option to get something before anybody else i.e "I've got first dibs on the chair John is going to sell" and b) a website offering overpriced furniture and frequented by interior designers who if they knew or cared could source the same stuff elsewhere for far less money.

NickR6TY.
My advise is to...
NickR6TY.
My advise is to make an effort to match the peaces of
furniture. That doesn't mean that they have to have
the same design. They can be totally different and, still go well with one another.
Example: I think The Eames Lounge chair goes well in this
interior (see link). Nothing has its style in that interior, but
the chair goes very nicely there.
In your room, in my opinion, what really doesn't go with the
Eames Lounge chair are the big leather sofa and armchair.
If you replace them with a set in fabric, light colour, with
pattern (tiny) and square-looking style (like the one in the
link I've posted) the all room is going to look much better.
The right set (set / armchair) is the element that will bring
everything together.
Another important thing is how you use the space. In your
room things are too near to one another. You should eliminate
at list one armchair to make it nicer looking and more
comfortable. In your picture I don't see the space for the new
chair (or armchair?) unless the area of the room that does not
appear in the photo is bigger than what I think. Just my opinion.

I had meant
to tell James that I like the fabric in the first photo of this thread. And the second photo of the Russell Wright chair makes a strong case for the design.

Antonella
Hi Antonella,
Paulanna summed up what "first dibs" means really well with her first definition (i.e., definition a). Her definition b was provided as a bit of a joke. 1stdibs.com is a website that perfectly fits the definition she provided in defintion b.
Regarding your mother's interpretation of the phrase (that it means "author's rights") -- that's not what "first dibs" means (at least not in America). Hope this has helped.

Hi brbeard
no, it's not my mum that thinks that.
I said "author rights", not her.
What i said was: my mum says that "first dibs" is like if you say "i said that first when nobody else had thought of saying it".

Thanks Antonella - I'm currently buying a few new items for the room, a nice long/low rosewood sideboard for the plasma/hi fi to sit on/in, and a small boy sideboard to go behind where the 670 was (in place of the high chest).
Fancy a new lamp too for the smaller sideboard, always liked Aulenti's Pipistrello with the Black base.
I now have a PK 22 in place of the 670, the sofas will be next on my list to change. Something along the lines of leather/steel would be my choice I think.
