Comfort
The Compact is very comfortable. (Small) overnight guests have even slept on mine without complaint.
By the way, that 3473 DOESN'T actually seem to have sold... It looks like the listing simply ended.

Love the 3473
Barry is right on. The 3473 is so much more refined (and rare) than the compact. They also don't typically cost much more than a compact. Oh... and the one on Ebay was way overpriced, and didn't sell.

You're right, now that I look at the
eBay listing. It's worth double what a compact sofa is worth....

Where to see a 3473 sofa?
Poach, I'm curious to see this sofa your all talking about since you've said it's much nicer & rare compared to the compact sofa. Any suggestions?

My living room would be a good place to start
But seriously, it's documented in the book Eames Design. I also found several pix by just googling "Eames 3473".

Pegboard, the top 3473 used to belong to me. Recovered in Maharam Kvadrat Tonus. I traded it to a nice fella in Chicago.

That would be me
Thanks. Still have it. Still love it.
I've had several compact sofas, and this 3473. I'm partial to the 3473 if only because it is less common, I like the horizontal piping detail, the legs are more sculptural and the satin finish of the legs goes well with other pieces we have. More so than the polished chrome of the sofa compact.
It's an acquired taste. I know folks who hate the 3473. They think it looks like a fat, clumsy sofa compact. To each his own I guess.
I do find the sofa compact a bit more comfortable (more lower back support) than the 3473 but neither is really a "lay back and watch movies" kinda' sofa. In our family room where the TV is we have a Nelson modular group sofa which is great since it's so long I can stretch out on it (I'm pretty tall) and the arms are a great height for resting your head. Just add a pillow and I'm so comfortable that if the movie is not really engaging, I'll nod right off.

3473 is silly good looking...
You did well getting that one, Pegboard. And you'll be pleased to know that I've placed my rump on your very sofa as well I'm sure. That design is definitely one I've flagged for purchase down the road after the kids are old enough to care. I've owned a regular Compact. But both are really more suited for a study than a living room.

Satin finish on the legs?
If the legs of your 3473 have a satin finish, it's only because they've oxidized. The aluminum group products begin life with a mirror-like shiny surface. To each his own... but I love the look of mine when freshly polished.

Yup
I like the burnished look of vintage aluminum bases on pieces like the sofa, universal base tables and aluminum group chairs. Also the patina of vintage stainless steel with the scuffs and light scratches knocking back that mirror-like finish. Same with wood pieces. If it's shiny and perfect it does not have the same soul as something with some wear and history. Maybe it's me, but I like stuff with a little "love" on it.

Reupholster a Sofa Compact ?
Hi,
I saw an Eames Sofa Compact for sale and while I love the look of the furniture, the fabric isn't in the best shape. Would it be worth reupholstering ? Or maybe that's not cost effective at all given the amount of cloth needed + work ?
What would be an estimate using Maharam/Kvadrat fabric ?
Thanks for your inputs !
