Inspired by M_Andersen's "Best furniture design of 2008", I am curious of your personal picks of non-furniture products released or announced in 2008.
My top list (it's short):
1. Apple's unibody aluminium "MacBook" (Apple) for radically rethinking conventional laptop construction, for showing that it is possible and economically viable for a company to take control over its own manufacturing and bring it back home, and for taking Apple one (albeit small) step closer to environmental sustainability by reducing the environmental impact of the MacBook.
Except for Apple, I can't think of any one company or designer that has been consistently great. Everyone has been churning out new products en masse, with only the occasional highlight. "More is more" seems to have been the motto. Visibility over substance. Few if any have been true visionaries or managed to solve actual problems. So to me design in 2008 has been mostly for show, with far too many unnecessary new products, statements, concepts and visions that no one really believed in. In other words, no major change from previous years. For 2009, I am hoping that companies will show more restraint in selecting new designs for production.
