Hello,

I have a gigantic sectional from 1978 by Hayes Furniture Manufacturers - Oakland, CA. Its has a chrome base and is upholstered in a natural Indus cotton. Does anyone know the history behind the company? Or any designers who worked for the company? It looks like it was sold/ordered by "Total Concepts". All I know is that it was purchased for $12,000 back in '78. I have attached some pictures below.... Thanks!

The name I had encountered in the past associated with this type of furniture & with that manufacturer is Ray Zimmerman.

Not a household name (not sure of the designer 's gender either) & so specific to this part of California. The type of clientele that bought this large sectional suites is also very specific like your house (?) where the image was taken, you either have large picture windows that overlooks the Pacific Ocean or the vineyard/wineries of Sonoma Valley.

$12,000 for a sectional in 1978 was a lot of money, that was what my parents paid for a typical 3 bedroom 2 bath house in Chatsworth,CA also in 1978.

Hi Noel,

I own this exact couch and was looking online to see how much I should sell it for.

The original fabric is the champagne velour you see on the base and back. It looks like someone updated the seats and pillows.

What did you end up selling it for? I see there are two similar Hayes chairs on 1stDibs that sold for $10,000 for a set of 2.

@lilibalfour  The pricing displayed on 1stDibs is typically wildly inflated "asking" prices. The actual selling prices, usually far less,  are not shown.  A better indication of what you might sell an item for are auction results, such as those on liveauctioneers.com.  There are three results for Hayes chairs there, including the pair you saw on 1stDibs (before reupholstery).    And keep in mind, the cost to reupholster furniture like this, especially if you have to replace cushion foam or down, is very high.

The chair and ottoman sold for $1,000.

I imagine the sectional is five to eight seats. So I'd extrapolate that out to $5,000 to $8,000.

@mark737, One can only imagine what a quality "champagne velour" upholstery fabric is going for these days. That '70's bachelor pad look doesn't come as cheaply as it did not that long ago. A period I'd personally rather not relive, thank you, but it's a hoot watching trends repeat!

@tktoo2  Funny, my only brush with velour was a few groovy shirts I rocked as a swinging pre-teen. Definitely don't want to relive that period.
