Please excuse my ignorance. Can someone please help me identify my dining room set. I've done some research to try and figure it out myself but I'm just more confused. I've seen it listed as 1960's mid-century modern Romanian drop leaf hideaway table with four folding chairs. As 1960's modern mid-century Danish double drop leaf gateleg table with 4 matching chairs. And 1950's Vintage mid-century modern drop leaf table and 4 folding chairs. Just to mention a few. I've uploaded a pic that has the stamps of all 4 of my chairs. To save time the other is a stock photo of the set. I know the stamps are hard to read but I'm hoping that someone might recognize it. There are no stamps or markings on the table anywhere. Not on the bottom, not inside, and not in the drawer. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I can't make out what the round stamps say but the biggest one at the top says ROMANIA, so i think it's a pretty safe assumption to say your set was made there. It is stained beech.

I don't know if this set is a copy of a Danish design--seems like I've seen a Danish-made set like this but it's been awhile. And for what it's worth, dealers and the general population often use the word "Danish" to describe a style without actually meaning the piece was made in Denmark. And some dealers will describe a piece as Danish hoping shoppers will take it to mean it's really Danish and therefore worth whatever the price is (higher, in other words).

Yes, there was this year a thread with a similar design, but under the table there where 4 smaller tables, and not chairs. That was Denish, and Leif commented, if I recall correctly, that one of those tables would the only decent companion of a Papa Bear.

Given this set is from Romania, take it as a nice design.

Cheers

Ernest.

I remember that thread, Ernest--I am thinking of a table and chairs set though, and it was years ago that I saw it. I just can't remember if it was Danish or not.

Either way, a lot of the Danish style furniture out of the eastern European countries was copied from Scandinavian designs, or at least inspired by them.

You guys are awesome. Thank you for responding so quickly I really appreciate it. Yes it's definitely Romania. I was having a hard time with the round stamp as well. I tried to get a better picture of the stamp. Hoping that maybe it could give you a little bit more information. I really appreciate your time and I'm truly amazed at how much there is to know about a piece of furniture and that you guys know it.

This is Not exactly the story behind it but a Blog entry from someone who really seems to get excited over this set. https://cripessuzette.wordpress.com/2014/06/24/guess-where-ive-been/

There seem to be quite a lot of these around.

And: a quick Google search will bring up some of the same chairs marked as yugoslavian. Since Yugoslavia was the centre of midcentury design in eastern europe I would guess it was produced there first.

It is a gateleg table design, with chair storage. I think I actually saw one that was teak and made in Denmark a while back, but the vast majority I have seen are from all over, including the USA.

Not aware of any specific designer or manufacturer being associated with this design (or its many variants).

Chairs are not too comfortable, but the overall package is really handy for extra table space when having parties/guests/holiday gatherings.
