Evening all,
Trust your keeping well.

Hope you don't mind me reaching out to you to help authenticate my recent acquisition.

I believe this chair is from Circa 1970 and is an EA220 or EA 420 four-legged exec chair.

I do have my reservation about certain parts of this chair and its authenticity one being the base of it, it looks completely off and the welds look terrible. I'm pretty confident the actual chair/ wheelbase is period and correct.

Could someone who maybe is a connoisseur in this field be able to help me out with this piece, please. Unfortunately no stickers or marking on the aluminium which may also present a concern.

please see the photos attached.
Many thanks in advance.

Oliver

@ollie9swy, When you write "base" do you mean the (painted black) tilt mechanism? I've never seen one with the welds ground smooth. The welded joints on vintage Herman Miller chairs have always appeared more-or-less similar to your example.

The only potential problem I noticed in your photos is that the plastic(?) seat post bushing has come loose from the hub of the base and may need replacement. These are available from various vendors and are considered a normal wear part (as is the torsion bar inside the tilt mechanism).

Edit: I looked again at your photos and some of the welds are indeed less pretty than others I've seen though apparently still solid and I think likely original. It's possible that they are evidence of repair or maybe just that a new apprentice was on duty that day.

Hi, yes I’m referring to the tilt mechanism, everything works as should just looks as you said grounded down, so I wonder whether it’s a replacement/ repair. Thanks for taking the time to examine the photos
