Hi design lovers,
Can anyone shed some light on this Frankl cork top dining table I just bought?
Here's what I know:
-Frankl for Johnson Furniture
-Mahogany and cork construction
What I'd like to know is it a more scarce model? I can find only one other example so far in a NYC gallery.
The first two pics show my table with crated leaves, the last two are of the one in NYC (images by Craig Van Den Brulle)
Any and all information is appreciated!
Cheers,
Josh

Are there any Frankl fans out there? I'd love to know if this is part of a designated line Frankl designed, and any other pertinent info. I can't find any auction results, or any other information on this particular table.
I'd love to know if anyone has ever seen this model before.
Cheers,
Josh

joshuaowen - check your public library if there is a copy of the Paul Frankl book, your table might be mentioned there.
https://www.amazon.com/Paul-Frankl-Modern-American-Design/dp/0300121024
If your table is by Paul Frankl, the examples I had seen (and own) have a very small manufacturer ink stamp of Johnson Furniture usually in the underside of the main top and no mention of Paul Frankl. The cork clad wood top stained transparent white is indeed usually attributed to Paul Frankl but it could also be in the style of (?). These cork top tables were designed mid to late 1940's more part of the late American Streamlined Modern/Art Deco than mid 20th century modern and were for clientele who embraced modernism but on the conservative side also known as 'Grand Rapids Modern', not necessarily from that region but the modern style embraced by wealthier consumers during that period. In terms of Paul Frankl work, the examples sought by many collectors is the Skyscraper Line from the 1920s Art Deco period which also spawned many look alikes.
Paul Frankl or not, your table will look great in a roomy entrance hall/stairway.

Thank you mimimoma! I appreciate the info; I will definitely check on the book.
I've looked all over and couldn't find a Johnson stamp, just the model and finish markings as pictured.
It's a beautiful table, much grander than the pics make it look. It will take a very large dining room to accommodate this piece.
Thanks again,
Josh

Josh - I took a photo of my Paul T Frankl table for Johnson Furniture and the stamped numbers looked identical to yours (not a guaranteed method of authentication).
These tables are indeed on the large side, mine can seat 6 armchairs or 8 side chairs comfortably without adding a leaf.  This table needs one of those Beverly Hills mansions with a grand entrance & a dramatic swooping staircase in the background.

Beautiful table; I love that particular design. Thanks for the pics. Would love to see the Johnson stamp if your current table has one and if you're able. That will help me look for any remnants of a stamp on mine. If it's a hassle please don't bother.
I'm 99% sure mine is Frankl. I've actually reached out to Wright auction house to see if they'll consign. I figure at the very least they may be able to provide me with a positive ID.
Oh, and if you know anyone in Beverly Hills looking for a dining table please let me know 😉
Josh

The seller attributes this chair to Paul Frankl but I don't think so. How could we verify?
