Side-hinged doors that are more than 25% wider than they are high make me nervous -- and doors that are of that proportion -- or worse -- and have hinges placed closer to each other than necessary make me mad.

The lovely cabinet under discussion is a rarity in the former regard (at least), isn't it ? Responsible designers of that or any other period usually know better.

I was looking at photos of the dining area at Fallingwater and noticed for the first time the side-hinged doors to the wall unit. Wondering if Wright and company would have drawn what I saw in the pictures, I consulted the drawings. Sure enough, the doors were drawn as top hinged. A highly reputable woodworking firm, the Gillin company in Milwaukee, did all the walnut millwork in the house. I can't imagine they came up with that modification unaided; I can only think that an unwary client must have ordered the change.
