| Some of the differences | 2 Relevance | 20 years ago | koen | General discussion | |
| Some of the differences between the compact and the regular fluorescents is that the first one is a consumer product (often mass produced in China) and the second is considered a more professional light source because the large users are offices, schools, factories, hospitals etc. were the buyer is often more knowledgeable. How many consumers would look at the CRI (Color Rendition Index) or light temperature that Gerrit is mentioning...as well as real electricity consumption. By changing sockets more and more north american fixtures are now made suitable for ... | |||||
| RE: Help identifying maker ~Hans Olsen 'roundette' dining table & chairs or design copy? | 2 Relevance | 5 years ago | cdsilva | Identification | |
| The closer photo has the impression that all of the wood and upholstery is fairly new. Combined with detail differences, my guess would be that it is fairly recent production (probably unlicensed). If you could get photos of the undersides of the table and chairs, that would help make it more definitive. | |||||

| let me disagree Olive there is not only "ethnocentric bull-crap". there are also cultural differences, and everytime one refers to culture, a generalisation (e.g average) is necessary. One thing I've been noticing in many posts (the ones with the most replies) is a general (average) interest, if not obsession, with value, monetary value of objects. And excuse me for this additional generalisation, but the importance of this kind of value, and the status symbol this value originates, is far more radicated in american rather than european culture. This is how ... | |||||
| Gender differences are important | 2 Relevance | 22 years ago | Annette.sco | General discussion | |
| Gender differences are important Olive, as usual you speak good sense. I'm very interested in gender differences in general and in the design/architecture fields in particular. So far, women haven't been nearly as important as men in either. You might perhaps expect that in architecture (for influential women architects I can only think off-hand of Eileen Gray and Zaha Hadid - Ray Eames, and Alison Smithson being mainly associated with their husbands) because of (arguably sex linked) mathematical and spacial ability, and the ability to dominate contract ... | |||||

| the disadvantage of limited linguistic context We are indeed battling with words, not the concepts they represent. Instinct is a word that was given to nearly any action an animal takes. The idea that a beaver is somehow programed to build a dam similar to how we program a computer is quite ridiculous. If a beaver were programed it would not be able to handle the wide variety of materials that it uses to construct the dam. That is to say look at our computer aided manufacturing. You need to give each machine exactly the correct material to produce the en ... | |||||

| @fredhh Not an expert here but, based on a shallow dive, I would have to say no. There are simply too many differences between "your" example and images of Sibast models online to call it anything but an "homage" to Vodder's design. He hasn't been active here in a long while, but maybe try reaching out to Simon at Danish Homestore for his take? | |||||

| Hans Wegner JH 507 similar dining chairs and draw leaf trestle table | 2 Relevance | 2 years ago | J Kendel Johnson | Identification | |
| At first glance, these dining chairs look like Hans Wenger model JH 507's for Johannes Hansen, but there are several subtle differences - the fronts of the arm rests are more squared off, and the tops of the back rests are rounded off cubes, not dowel-shaped, for example. These are the best photos I have at the moment, but I think you can probably see the armrests have a slight flare. Wegner had over 500 different chair designs, but even so, I'm guessing this is a case of another designer "borrowing" or being inspired by the JH 507. I have also not been able ... | |||||

| ... trying to identify the maker of my table. It occurs to me that the methods of jointing more generally would be an aspect of construction that would help differentiate between makers. In that vein perhaps the flanged disc and bolt used to join the legs to the apron might be one such distinguishing characteristic? I have enclosed another photo of that and wonder if you have any thoughts on that? Also attached are 2 images of the segmented T & G joint on the table top. The centrally located gap between the 2 tongues is approximately 8 cm wide. Do you know ... | |||||
| Rubber ages differently | 2 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | Repair | |
| Rubber ages differently depending on environmental factors and I think the manufacturing process, too. Raw rubber is cooked in the foam-making process and I know that the raw rubber has to be very fresh to get the best results. There are a bunch of factors that by their nature would be hard to get exactly precise every single time, or from one manufacturer to the next. Your chairs might also just have urethane foam, which also ages but doesn't get hard and crunchy the way latex foam does. So, that said...I've done a lot of gluing of fabric to foam. Lik ... | |||||
| I find it difficult to generalize | 2 Relevance | 15 years ago | Eameshead | General discussion | |
| I find it difficult to generalize I find it difficult to generalize, without a specific "art attempt" to consider. (Its hard enough when you have something to look at!) One can usually find a fairly hefty art historical exception to any set of rules that you can come up with, for what constitutes "Art". Some of these ideas above are good for thought though. Better than I could come up with. So much depends upon the level of inquiry of the viewer. History tends to sort it out in the long run, but only in one way. But for any individual, at any given moment, i ... | |||||

| Arne Vodder dining table? | 2 Relevance | 2 years ago | fredhh | Identification | |
| Hi together, I would like to buy this drop-leaf table, but I'm not sure if it's really an Arne Vodder table because the examples on the net look a little different in certain details. In all examples online, the drop leafs are supported by two braces on each side, whereas "my table" only has one. And the table legs are designed differently where they connect to the frame. Unfortunately the table is not labeled. So my question to the specialists: Is it an Arne Vodder table or not? Thanks a lot for your help! Attachment: DSC01630.JPG | |||||
