| ... were in fact a family from Thisted where master cabinetmaker Jens Kirkegaard was married to Erika Kirkegaard. They had twelve children. Peter was the third, born in 1891. Erik was the youngest, born in 1905. Both were trained as cabinetmakers, Erik in Holbaek, Peter even became a master cabinetmaker. but between 1925 and 1930 both moved to Copenhagen. Peter started working as "Representant", Erik had joined him by 1940, selling furniture and cellulose products. I guess they worked together closely, since both lived in Gentofte. What happened then, I can o ... | |||||

| ... production. The word ‘knockoff’ is not fit to describe it as that word describes production which copies the look of a design to sell for less and the economics of such demand cheapened production. And furthermore in the context of danish cabinetmakers in 1955, dowels were used by some of them, and very cleverly such that they made strong joints, strong enough that a chair is still standing 65 years later. In the cabinetmaker world there were other cabinetmakers who were very resistant to change from the techniques, tools, and materials they have learned ... | |||||

Most of the cases are in the younger age groups, who do not seem to be able to understand the severity of the situation ( the average age of those who died from Covid is 83) Any way, moving on,to pass the time @home, I have been doing some "cleaning" up, AKA deleting/organising my files etc. Came across this photo from a Liberty & Co. 1901 publication and it made ... | |||||

| There's a good business idea... There's a good business idea right there, to convert old ones and sell them. My brother recently bought an east german speaker that had been converted to an iphone speaker. More people ought to do that too with all the old veneer-clad speakers you'll find at the dump. http://www.diefabrik.org/tomboxgallery.html# http://newspirit-square1.blogspot.com | |||||

| My 1 year anniversary! | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | kin1117 | General discussion | |
| Today marks my 1 year anniversary of collecting furniture, Eames pieces in particular. Last year today, I drove from SF to almost San diego and back within 24 hours to pick up my first collection and this collection/addiction is going stronger than ever (don't know if it's good or bad). To say it's exciting and fun is an understatement because all the knowledge and conversations with other fellow addicts and collectors have been eye opening. This forum has been my daily fix and given me a venue to "brag" about my experience as well. And I just wanted to than ... | |||||

| Arthur Erickson's buildings? | 1 Relevance | 20 years ago | dcwilson | General discussion | |
| I was in San diego over the weekend. My wife attended a conference at the San diego Convention Center. I find it an endlessly fascinating building to look at and walk around and through. I don't know if I would call it a great building, but it feels wonderfully right where it is. And it provokes me anew each time I see it. I looked at some of his other work on the web tonight (he's built many things) and I can't quite decide if he's an exceptional talent or just a slightly more sophisticated John Portman. I had thought the latter for some time, but now I'm t ... | |||||
| Maurice Burke - Intl Man of Mystery | 1 Relevance | 6 years ago | mark737 | General discussion | |
| The recent thread on tulip bar stools raised the question about connections between Maurice Burke, Arkana, and Burke Inc of Dallas. Doing some brief research I was able to find a connection. Maurice Prentice Burke was Canadian, born in 1921 and died 2013. There is very little online about his life and work, or about Burke Inc and their history. But I did find this 1962 patent application for a chair swivel mechanism, which lists his name, and Burke Inc. along with their Dallas address. So, I would assume Maurice Burke was the owner of Burke Inc. This would e ... | |||||

| @molassekoeniggmx-de It definitely by Fredri Kayser for Vatne mobler. Model 109. I think the 108 is the highback version. And then again, maybe Mats confused the model numbers ! Image courtesy of Mats Linder. Kayser died in 1968. Possibly one of his last designs? Attachment: Screenshot-372.png Better detail on 2nd image. Model 108 Attachment: F-Kayser-model-108.jpg | |||||
| How do I help design/decorate a kitchen? | 1 Relevance | 6 years ago | ShaunieG | General discussion | |
| My mother has her own ways - I mean, who doesn't right? But sometimes, some of her ways are wrong or just plain mind-boggling. Ever since Dad died. she relied on hiring people to do the works - plumbing, fixing the dishwasher, trimming the yard, and others. So, when the granite cracked, I'm talking about like an earthquake happened in the kitchen, she got her new countertop from here. But with the new countertop, the rest of the kitchen looks outdated. And she's been mentioning it to me almost every time we call each other. How do I help her out? I don't kno ... | |||||

| @lexi Thanks for the reply. Just to add a few more bits of info I found: A death notice for Peter Vestergaard says he was born in 1917 and died in 1977, just after celebrating his 60th birthday and the company's 25th anniversary, making the start date 1952. P. VESTERGAARD MØBELFABRIK A/S of Silkeborg was incorporated in 1971 and dissolved in 2001. In 1990 they opened a fourth factory in Silkeborg for 50 million DKK. There is what appears to be a date handwritten on the back of my sideboard of June 1975. That would make it newer than most of the piec ... | |||||
| RE: Finn Juhl for Søren Willadsen | 1 Relevance | 5 years ago | Herringbone | General discussion | |
| ... Willadsen is not in there, his factory was located in Vejen, he wasn’t a member of the Copenhagen Guild and thus never exhibited there. And the magazines you refer to are probably the most popular ones like Mobilia and Bo Bedre? Mobilia was launched in 1955 or so, Bo Bedre in 1960. So it’s highly unlikely to find Willadsen/Juhl ads in there, that was just too late. Willadsen‘s collaboration with Finn Juhl had stopped by then, the old Willadsen died in 1956 and the manager John Lawerenz headed in different directions. What did happen after 1956 was, that Ju ... | |||||
