| ... it a "re-issue" to be kind). The original was sold under the Secticon name (model name C-1 ..3 models were designed by Mangiarotti, the C-1 being of course the best...the other two were like more common "ball" clocks). The Secticon used a very accurate and tricky (and very expensive) Swiss made movement called a constant-force escapement (aka spring remontoire). The re-issue uses a German quartz movement. Also, the original base was made of a special coloured phenolic plastic (like Bakelite) with solid brass accents, rather than the white porcelain base fo ... | |||||
| Heath, regarding a modernist myth... | 1 Relevance | 18 years ago | dcwilson | General discussion | |
| ... attempt to address your comment: didn't modernism, despite its heavy emphasis on geometric form language evolve into yet another mythology suffused with a near messianic mysticism regarding its potential to improve and reorder the world. First, I agree with you that many moderns did act with a kind of messianic mysticism at times, and I do think that many persons in the recent modernist revival, attribute to it some not entirely logical and persuasive purposes. But having said this, I would characterize what we both note about the Modernists more as a shift ... | |||||

| ... usually doesn't do much good to file a complaint about an active listing if it only has a few days to go because it takes them that long to get to it. I've reported shilling and the auctions were ended by Ebay and the seller suspended briefly. I have also reported a seller who had been suspended multiple times and kept registering with a new name. Ebay said I didn't have enough proof at first but eventually the seller inadvertantly offered sufficient evidence and she was booted off for good. She ripped off a lot of people first, though. I've bought and s ... | |||||

| P.S. Spanky That lamp was chalkware and now I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy it. There's always a next time, right? What's the coolest thing you didn't buy that you wish you had? Mine is a 6 foot long oval wicker basket with a wooden bottom that was used in the hot, humid US southern states at the turn of the century to store BODIES in on ICE during a funereal viewing. I saw one in Hendersonville, NC last year and didn't buy it. I've never seen another one before or since and regret it every day. Biggest regret? | |||||

| Some of these people on ebay... Some of these people on ebay are pretty untakeable, though I will venture (with some reluctance) that one might occasionally bump into some treasure now and then with said query. I saw a picture somewhere once of someone who had tattooed an Eeames Lounger on their forearm. Can you hear my flesh creeping?? I feel like, though, that this stuff is safe from lame association or saturation. Hippies didn't ruin flowers for me, either. | |||||

| Lucifer I didn't make any claims that Plycraft was a "great company." However, they did actually produce at least one iconic piece and another handful of pieces that are understandably enjoyed. This is more than companies like Burke can claim. And Lucifer, may I please express myself without any reprimand? I am starting to feel like you are badgering me, and just disagreeing with anything I say for the fun of it. I can't seem to say anything without you writing some direct remark trying to discredit my thoughts. If I am wrong, please accept my apologies, it ... | |||||

She just wanted a big, impressive book that had a cover on it that would go in her blue and yellow room. Easy sale. Whitespike, I respectfully disagree with you regarding copying a Mondrian. I don't see a thing wrong if mjhaynes wants to paint a canvas for his/her own pleasure for his/her own use in the style of Mondrian, Calder or Dr. Seuss or Marvel comics. She/he is no ...

| ... Nelson Associates joined HERMAN Miller, his clock designs were produced by HOWARD Miller and continued this arrangement until the early 1970's. I'm not absolutely certain of the break-off date, but the later new clocks were designed by Arthur Umanoff, who was a George Nelson Associates employee. By the early 1970's most of the older Nelson clocks had been discontinued, but it's possible that a few were still in their catalog. However, by the mid-1970's, all of the Nelson Associates clocks were discontinued and strangely, HOWARD Miller had basically disall ... | |||||

Two great improvements!: Woof-woof, I didn,t really pay enough much attention, and re-reading: About the on-off system, by Touching the lamp, ,,, much the same way a bucket or can is kicked,,, as you said. Touching better than twacking, : ) I was searching for that, thinking was a ,,subliminal,, thing : ), But ,,subliminal,, was the idea itself!, Is the perfect subtle accent. It,s perfect!, the perfect clue. But was a ceiling lamp, (that was spouse to be ...

| Pipes by Joe Colombo dcwilson, if you're still interested in modernist -ish pipes, here's a 1969-70 pair I spotted in a book about Joe Colombo, who didn't seem to feel dressed without a briar. The caption reads, "Nei suoi schizzi de pipe per Butz Choquin, Joe Colombo ottene un piccolo, ma oltremodo practico miglioramento della classica forma del fornello in modo che divertasse una basa d'appoggio." | |||||
