| I had a chair once very | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| I had a chair once very similar to yours, and didn't pay much at all for it, either. I'm sure it's American-made. I stripped the lacquer off mine with lacquer thinner and then ebonized it with permanent India ink (super easy to do). Then gave it a coat of paste wax for a soft glow. Mine had either jute or elastic webbing that was held in place with metal clips on the inside edges of the seat frame. These had sawtooth edges to grip the webbing and were screwed into the frame. I chucked them all and just stapled new elastic webbing to the top surface of t ... | |||||

| ... That is what vaguely spooks through my head too, only I didn't have it clear enough as you have. Thanks for the Haiku too! I have and old first production Eames Lounger, fully duck filled (thought it had also foam in there at first, but recently found out it hasn't) with three screws and rubber washers on the back panels, that has one (lets call it a) 'handicap', that is, that the leather of the left armpad is NOT the Connolly leather it is supposed to be. So somebody exchanged the leather, probably for a good reason. In the beginning I wanted (I never rea ... | |||||

| Timo, I am the one from EF (English Forum--a website in Switzerland for ex-pats) who sent you here to this site but I didn't know about the label until I saw it on here. (Yes, Timo, I am a DA regular from way back). It is totally against DA policy to talk about money. Search ebay in numerous countries for Oddvin Rykken chair and see what has sold. Remember, you are missing an ottoman and that makes a big difference. (But my earlier guesstimate on EF of 450 USD is still reasonable). | |||||

But, than again, I also didn't paint a lot in my life, and maybe it is possible to achieve this level of precision without professional equipment or so, just by having experience and a steady hand. Enough words, I made some pics.

| @cdsilvia (....)"Asking for valuations and advertising your wares in the forum is what is against the rules." I did not know that. I was supposed to know, I know that, cause when joining a forum you accept the 'terms & conditions' that you're supposed to read, but I didn't read them. Then again, it also wasn't my intention to advertise my chair. I purely only wanted to know if I am/was right in thinking it was a very early (first) 50's production. I also wanted to know, as my first post says, what you guys think of chairs that have crazy high prices. I mean, ... | |||||

Money this, money that 😉 , hahaha 😀 Bla bla bla Maybe the world shouldn't be a fair place after all, and maybe everything shouldn't be based on prices. Everything is too expensive and too much based on making profit. Ideally.....bla bla bla. Lovely discussion, but a whole different topic. I know that eventually my price on ... will drop in the upcoming months to maybe a 1000 before somebody buys it, I don't mind. I just had no idea what ...
| Another near-Lamino popped up | 1 Relevance | 11 years ago | MLF | General discussion | |
| Another near-Lamino popped up on EBay, a rocking chair version, again with the second support slat and divergent transition from armrest to leg. Would be interesting to know who made these . . . Can anyone comment on the comfort of the authentic Lamino? How is the height of the headrest? Many 50s lounges didn't manage the transition to larger heights very well in that respect. | |||||

| re: criticism of the "designed by" Alexander Girard bit, or selection vs. design: I think a point there is that selection of elements is part of the design process but individual selections may not be "new" designs in themselves... e.g. Girard did not "design" the color blue, nor did he design the Naugahyde, though he may have specified the use of the stuff for the upholstery of the chair. In this case, the product was pre-existing and not "designed" by Girard. I always think it's funny when I see old Herman Miller swatches of plain old natural linen or so ... | |||||

| As always Leif your knowledge and help is amazing! I'm afraid they are definitely mine now, the seller has disappeared off the face of the earth. As I didn't pay a premium for them it makes me feel a little better about it. I paid about how much some people pay for one or two chairs. I may just try and have them fixed one by one over the next while, try and restore them to their former glory? I'm hoping it will be possible, if not for all of them then at least for a set of 6. I'm at the stage where I can't really afford the nicer things I want unless I get t ... | |||||

I've done this myself (not on anything of value!) so it's a very familiar look to me. I like the rays of the wood too but the stain has to be even to look natural, otherwise what's the point? I still vote for black lacquer!

Based on what you have written above, there is a chance you may not have even come to Chicago yet to pick them up. Yet, the chairs are in "excellent condition", have the original bases (enameled steel bucket on chromed steel base), and original glides. And last but not least, "Blue pads is [sic] designed by the legendary Alexander Girard." Any benefit of doubt that a potential buyer might have for this listing before ...

They cater to interior designers who want to come in while on a job, buy, and call it a day. (If you're doing over someone's apartment as a pro, you can't wait a year for the right chairs to show up on eBay; you have to just get them, and for that you, and your client, pay a premium.) If you look at the Sold Listings on eBay, you'll see what they actually go for, rather than what p ...

| Well I went to see these today and snapped them up, the photo didn't do them any justice! They were reupholstered at some stage, their little ceramic plaque is affixed to the chair. The plaque makes me think it was around when they were made, the 60's/70's. Any further thoughts on them now I have better pictures? Here a ton weight and I'm pretty sure it's rosewood! | |||||

| Rnmb, I mentioned Kodawood for the chair because I have a one that is extremely similar to the chair posted. A couple months ago I had the opportunity to by a Kodawood sofa and chair (Both Labeled). The chair was in pieces when I bought it so I didn't take any pictures of it but chair and sofa are in the process of being reupholstered. I had to have the walnut/elm (not sure which) on both pieces refinished by my wood guy too. Here is a couple pics of the sofa on the day I purchased it. I will post pics next week of the sofa & chair once I get them back ... | |||||
