| The only reason you would | 1 Relevance | 8 years ago | mgee76 | Repair | |
| The only reason you would want to strip this chair is if you didn't want it to be black anymore. The finish is opaque, which makes your repair work much easier. Just fill the missing bits and then color in. I do think an Ebony stain or black dye will make the work go faster in spots, but you could always fill voids, then give the whole thing a scuffing with 320 grit or so and then put down a fresh coat of black lacquer in a rattle can, if you felt like it. | |||||

| First in a bit A Paul Evans door knocker. I bought this on the bay because I LOVED IT - not for a ton. But I couldn't shake the feeling that I had seen something like it before and it just looked too good. Googling didn't get me much. I finally went to an auction site and sorted from Highest Price down and saw another P. Evans (one of the virus looking examples) with the same clasp at the top. I was going to install this on my front door, but now? Gosh. Decisions decisions | |||||

| ... that's what's going on here. I saw a listing for a sofa with very similar proportions to yours and the same style of tufting pretty much, but the arms are different. The dealer said that all original tags were on it though he/she didn't show the photos for whatever reasons. You could try hunting down Thayer Coggin catalogs from that era online--people upload that stuff all the time. There may be some here for all I know. As for the Monarch tag---I googled "Monarch Furniture" and found a Pinterest page with a lot of newer stuff but I think i spotted yo ... | |||||
| I usually get one of the more | 1 Relevance | 8 years ago | Spanky | Repair | |
| I usually get one of the more expensive brands of meth stripper. I've tried cheaping out a few times and mostly i have regretted it because the cheap stuff was thinner, evaporated faster, and/or just didn't take off as much stuff as quickly as did the $$$ brand. I used to get Zip-Strip paste remover but i don't know if that's around anymore. Red Devil was the cheap brand then. I just got a gallon of Klean-Strip but haven't used it yet. I don't care much for Citrus-strip. It seemed to work fine on some finishes but not on others. I don't remember the ... | |||||

| ... level with the object, you will get a better image of it. Several photos from different angles will give the best overall idea of shape & proportions. Photograph it against a plain background if possible; other stuff in the frame is distracting. I know you said you didn't have time to take better photos but you can always add more later to a thread. Measurements are always helpful, too. But yeah--sometimes nobody knows. Sometimes you get an answer months later if the right person happens to see it, maybe someone who sees an old ad or brochure or some ot ... | |||||

| ... is above the area you're working on and gravity works with you. You could even mask off the seat but I always worry that this will give me a sense of false security. Oil can still seep under masking tape if you aren't really careful. We have talked about that weaving material here before---not sure if it was in one of the three big threads about seat weaving or in another thread. Someone who wasn't a regular at the time popped in and explained what it is. I *think* it's actually a paper product, not cane---but I could be wrong. If it's paper, you can p ... | |||||
| Steelcase generally did wood | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | Identification | |
| Steelcase generally did wood arm rests on lounge chairs like this, and their cushions were box style, not whatever this is called (no front seams). They also didn't have this many visible fasteners, if any. I would guess these are by someone who was following the trend of the time set by Goodform and Steelcase. They're clunky looking, in my opinion. I'd sell. | |||||

| Good to know! Thanks, leif. I was worried about masking because a leaf fell onto my tabletop and I didn't notice it for awhile and the area under it was lighter. But it evened out pretty quickly once I noticed it and removed it. | |||||

| Hey Spanky, | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | AbSoDeS | Repair | |
| Hey Spanky, Thank you for your help! I was hoping someone had found some kind of seringue injectable glu or something :/ Concerning the foam it's not in a bad shape (imho), but the chair is "not that old" (82). Also, I have a pair of 1963 Pierre Paulin dining chairs, never touched, and the foam is still comfy and "homogeneous"... but maybe Artifort didn't use the same kind of foam... or the "storage" has to do with it too.. ? Anyway, thanks for your answer! And if someone has another idea... don't be shy! | |||||

| I did and I was actually hoping you would respond since you seemed the most knowledgeable! I didn't feel like there was any real resolution on the last set of pictures except for someone saying "ugh" to copies, but it didn't seem to have a clear "yes, this is a fake." It was noted that the hoop wasn't supposed to be parallel to the floor, and my hoop doesn't point towards the floor like that one does. The spindles are indeed almost exactly like the last set as well (and I'm not sure if that means they were hand shaved or faceted). Yes the seat is flat, bu ... | |||||

| Thanks so much for your input | 1 Relevance | 9 years ago | pim1962 | General discussion | |
| Thanks so much for your input. I didn't think it would be a considered a defect. My thought was if you are looking for a CH23 chair, this is one, with a replaced seat and their are several out there in the same manner. You can still use it as a chair, it is not broken. Maybe the word original was not the right choice. Since I have a bidder already, I will have to think about how to proceed. Thanks again. | |||||
