| Antonella Hi Antonella, Paulanna summed up what "first dibs" means really well with her first definition (i.e., definition a). Her definition b was provided as a bit of a joke. 1stdibs.com is a website that perfectly fits the definition she provided in defintion b. Regarding your mother's interpretation of the phrase (that it means "author's rights") -- that's not what "first dibs" means (at least not in America). Hope this has helped. | |||||

| I'm English and have always u... I'm English and have always understood 1st dibs to mean a) an option to get something before anybody else i.e "I've got first dibs on the chair John is going to sell" and b) a website offering overpriced furniture and frequented by interior designers who if they knew or cared could source the same stuff elsewhere for far less money. | |||||

| SDR, maybe "author rights"? ... SDR, maybe "author rights"? but it's more formal or official... my mum says that "first dibs" is like if you say "i said that first when nobody else had thought of saying it". Its said either jokingly or spitefully. paulanna, the designer can help you match pieces of furniture by giving you hints on many aspects of them like history, material, colour theory, etc. Also they can give you examples of interiors that are suitable for your furniture, or the other way round. It's creative and nice to work with a designer. My parent ... | |||||

| An American expression ? "Dibs" means choice by acclamation, as in "I called it" or I spoke first for it. A person can claim the right to that for which he or she has first spoken up. . . What is your expression for this ? | |||||

| i agree 1st dibs has both positive and negative aspects of its website. I have been recieving weekly emails from an interior design website, and I like the way they approach the whole antique/modern furniture deal. A majority of the product is beautiful, but sadly out of my budget. | |||||

| ... American way )", "I would love to know the suckers that actually buy from these people and hope they realize that they are getting ripped off, by a bunch of greedy store owners who are just waiting to kill a fat hog". Vivienne, you were the first to respond and you did not question LRF's obviously negative tone/attitude, nor the use of the word "suckers" and "fat hog" instead of, as you suggest: "clients". Let's be fair here. And if nevereatpork is a shop owner, he/she probably does not appreciate being called "really sorry" nor "greedy". The bitterness c ... | |||||

| Try having a shop In defense of 1st dibs. Try having a shop in NYC where your rent is $18k a month, & tell me that the prices asked for things that uneducated fat cats who come in off the street & buy without caring what price it is buy. Sell your crap on ebay for what you can get for it & be happy for it. When there is an $18k a month rent hanging over your head, don't begrudge a shop for getting such a large mark up. What does ebay charge you for rent? | |||||

| Visit the site often I haven't ever purchased anything through 1st dibs, but I have been visiting the site for over a year. I agree that some items are absurdly overpriced, but I have also seen many pieces that appeared to be priced fairly. I considered the purchase of a Jacobsen Swan Sofa at one point. | |||||
