| Marble, Maybe? | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| Marble, Maybe? Depending on the year of production, having a cabinet maker re-laminate the top surface might work, but it would look a little "off." Recent production from Knoll doesn't have a defined shoulder or seam. It's almost as if the top is dipped in laminate - a seamless transition through the 1/4" round-over into the 45 degree bevel. It's lovely - but wouldn't suit any sort of replacement. Forget calling Knoll. Love their customer service, but you could buy an entire pre-owned table for what they'll charge you. Keep an eye on eBay, I bought a 47" ... | |||||

| Zebrano was my first thought, too. I've never seen such dramatic color variation between growth rings like that, though. It almost looks faked, like diamond Wood or something, though it surely isn't. Typically, the backing or counter veneers are rejects or lesser quality of the same or similar species as the "A" face. This piece probably got tossed into the pile for being too wacky. | |||||
| the thickness has changed | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | nico leo | General discussion | |
| the thickness has changed The thickness of the wires has increased over the years I imagine due to the issues with them breaking. I have found this to be consistent with all the pieces including the side chairs, the diamond chairs, the bar stools and the bird chair. In my experience, the newer chairs hold up much better and rarely have broken welds or wires. | |||||
| Thanks for the prompt feedback ! | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | D-sign | General discussion | |
| Thanks for the prompt feedback ! Thanks very much for your help and prompt comments. I was confused because of the absence of rail on the bolts connection the seat to the base, but I am far from being an expert. They are apparently from 1991, which would tally with your comments regarding old diamond models. How much would a (Rilsan) powder-coating cost (per chair)? | |||||

| ... see - including anyone who finds a funny looking chair in their grandmas attic and checks eBay for a price before throwing it on craigslist. Everyone here loves design - but we love a "great deal!" just as much. Sellers who clownishly inflate prices influence (fool?) casual, low-information sellers into thinking their chair belongs in the Smithsonian instead of in a rec-room. This practice hurts us, one and all. That seller is irresponsible, un-serious, and is worthy of our loathing. We've all come across a busted-up Bertoia diamond chair for $950.00, righ ... | |||||

| Kaleidoscope clock Pegboard, your clock find inspired me to post a picture of two of the newer additions to my clock collection. I got the Compass clock a while back and the diamond Markers clock recent. I have the Kaleidoscope clock already and the Whirly-gig desk clock, making a total of four of the Motion-Notion clocks in the series. Always a rare find. | |||||

| Sorry! I read the topic of this thread wrong. Thought you were talking about the fiberglass Bertoia side chairs. My understanding is the fiberglass diamond chairs were not made by Knoll. I have not seen one in person myself. | |||||
| My opinion | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| My opinion Newer production chairs have notably thicker wires and thus do not have the same aesthetic appeal. I'm sure they are much more durable though. $400 is a fair market price for a vintage diamond chair in excellent condition with full cover. | |||||

| It looks like the original | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | vintagestique | General discussion | |
| It looks like the original wide base of the bird chair was replaced by a more narrow base of a diamond chair. The chairs definitely look old and copying Bertoia chairs is a fairly recent phenomenon so my guess is that they are original chairs but with a home repair on the bird chair. | |||||

| Hi | 1 Relevance | 13 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| Hi I am not very familiar with the history of the Bird chair, but I know that Knoll modified the design numerous times over the course of its production. This is also true of the wire side chair and the diamond (not so many changes with the diamond though). I have seen examples such as yours on the web, but not in person. In my opinion, there is no reason to believe that your chair is not Knoll. | |||||

It's not that difficult to do. They're only metal wire chairs. In their current condition it would only increase the resale value. They can't get much worse. If those were painted with a nice enamel, and matched in texture, color, and sheen, I'd get more for them in my store than they'd ever bring ... | |||||
