| What was the best thing about the 1980's? | 2 Relevance | 16 years ago | barrympls | General discussion | |
| What was the best thing about the 1980's? The early 1980's was the interest in Art Deco and chrome furniture. The late 1980's was the beginnings of interest in returning to the mid century design period. First with flamingos and other kitsch....then people started to find Herman Miller and Knoll and then....... | |||||

| And another thing Let's get this into perspective. All I said was that Olive was the thinking man's Cameron Diaz. it was a joke, implying that if I flatter her, she might send me some chairs to Australia. Jesus Christ (apologies to our Boble Belt readers), was that really so offensive? I hardly think that it constitutes a creepy comment? But hey, since 9/11 Americans have lost any semblance of a sense of humour. No Olive, I don't think you wear a cowboy hat. I just think you are probably a very BORING person. | |||||

| One more thing... I just saw this ad in Interior Design Mag. While I do beleive in a person/companies right to own their designs and reap the profit they desrve for the creation of them, this is ridiculous. These two chairs are indeed similar looking, but really is 'similar looking' a reason to label it a knock off? They have quite differetn proportions and upolstery treatments. Is the FFDI really trying to say that no two pieces of furniture can look similar? This can't be right. http://www.ffdi.org/fdi_ad.htm | |||||
| Here's the thing. | 2 Relevance | 15 years ago | fastfwd | General discussion | |
| Here's the thing. If you choose the expensive fabric that you love, you'll enjoy the chairs every time you use them and will quickly forget how much they cost. If you choose less-expensive fabric that you don't like quite as much, you'll be reminded every day that your chairs could have been perfect but aren't. Spend the money. Get what you want. | |||||
| The sad thing is, Cowan's | 2 Relevance | 10 years ago | SDR | Off topic | |
| The sad thing is, Cowan's portraits aren't even good likenesses. The family portrait of the Prince and Princess of Monaco and their children is a disgrace; the solo of Grace is better, but the two faces could belong to different women. There are a million hack painters, many with a few reliable reliable moves that they picked up somewhere. It makes one realize what genius there is in the real ones. | |||||

| but the thing is...... these things don't even approach being well wrought or artistic enough to compare them to the concrete LC2, the flamboyant embellishment of the wassily chair or even approach something as sophisticated as "post modern surrealism" shire is a hack and modernica isn't really an authority on art, class or design either..... so what does a collaboration between the two spawn ? a retarded red-headed step-child. wheres the appeal ?? its just pretty awful any way it is sliced. | |||||
| and another thing. . . | 2 Relevance | 22 years ago | SDR | General discussion | |
| and another thing. . . We do a lot of guessing and seat-of- the-pants estimating as to what is "good enough" in our work, and very little actual testing. . .it's as though we had no extra material or time to try some comparative samples of proposed methods. I encourage you to do a little trial glue-up; maybe a side-to-side comparison of the same material, at the same time/pressure, with two different adhesives. . .no? And let us all learn from your results. We are all inventors. Thanks SDR | |||||

| Let me try that picture thing again ...which means something like ""In his sketches de pipe for Butz Choquin, Joe Colombo obtain a small but extremely practico improvement of the classic form of the cooker so that became a base support." | Do you ever do that thing | 2 Relevance | 11 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| Do you ever do that thing where you pit two objects against each other to decide which you can do without and thus clear some space in your collection? I did it all the time back when I was going to local auctions every week for years and years. It was shocking how many things got cycled back onto the market after I was absolutely dead sure I would never, ever part with them---always because I found something new that I had to have even worse. And I don't regret any of the trade-ups! Well, maybe the 7' Svend Larsen rosewood tambour door credenza...a teeny bit... | |||||
| Another thing I forgot to add | 2 Relevance | 22 years ago | DavidDC | General discussion | |
| Another thing I forgot to add I tend to watch tv on the floor in front of the sofa. Hence, I dispensed with a large sized coffee table and use a jasper morrison tray table instead. For this reason, I thought the relaxer chair might be better suited for me, than, say, a bertoia chair or even an paulin's slice chair. David | |||||

| One thing to be aware of when | 2 Relevance | 9 years ago | Spanky | Repair | |
| One thing to be aware of when choosing the upholstery fabric or leather: if you want to go a little crazy with it, it will probably make the chairs less marketable if and when you (or your heirs!) decide to sell them. If this is decades from now, no big deal--most fabric will need to be redone by then anyway. But if you're like me and you cycle through a few different chair designs before settling on the one you want to keep long term, then go with something classic. (Ask me how I know this, though I probably thought when I chose the patterned fabric for my Kai Christiansens that I would never part with them.) | |||||

| yeah, hard to defend that purple THING Made me laugh at first. At least there is that. Perhaps one could appreciate it for its ATTEMPT at purely formal abstract shape relationships and angles.... (that is, if those relationships were actually well considered.) But in the end, it is still trying to be a chair, and seems to have failed miserably. I appreciate your restraint! Sometimes it is very difficult not to bash. | |||||
| one thing I learned about prices and value here at DA: | 2 Relevance | 17 years ago | claus (DE) | General discussion | |
| one thing I learned about prices and value here at DA: "An item is worth what someone is willing to pay at a given point in time (and space)." I bet there a few people here who, like me, didn't pay anywhere near those wright/ebay prices. All you need is patience, time and the will to search intensely, someday you'll find what you want for the price you want to pay (or it'll find you, but that would be very zen). | |||||
