To limit certain styles to certain countries, in this case Constructivism to Russia and some east bloc states is a blatent under estimation of the influence it had on modernism. On top of that the axis Moscou-Paris was very strong with Sergei diagilev as one of the main links...you might want to look up some of the posters for his Ballet productions in Paris...

| Personally.... Those two nice pieces are dwarfed by the fireplace. That fireplace needs a large sculpture, mirror or painting that is nearly as wide as the fireplace. Those two plaques should be on a blank part of your wall above a table or chair, perhaps on a diaginal! Try it. See what how you like it. | |||||
| Insane clock | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | barrympls | General discussion | |
| Insane clock I have probably already posted this, but here's an unmarked, super high quality heavy aluminum clock - probably Italian. It's 11 1/2" square and with a very deep carved out relief...It's great; the slightly diagnonal lines makes the clock look not quite square! The darn second hand fell off and thanks to one of my cats, it got ruined, and it's gone now. | |||||
| Rosewood or teakwood? | 1 Relevance | 14 years ago | NULL NULL | General discussion | |
| Hi everybody, I just bought a Grete Jalk sofa, it was offered as rosewood, but I have my doubts, it could be teak. Sometimes it's not easy for me to diagnose the different of the two woods, would anybody be able to estimate the character, that would be great, thanks a lot. Regards Marie | |||||
| SDR is right. | 1 Relevance | 15 years ago | tktoo | General discussion | |
| SDR is right. You'd certainly want to diagnose the problem before deciding to replace the socket assembly or parts thereof. Also, my experience has been that lamp sockets and associated components available at big box stores are of inferior quality to those offered by specialty vendors. SDR, I think my central contact may be depressed. I'm gonna try prying it up! | |||||

Paste wax is the normal recommendation for lubricating sticky drawers and tambours with carnauba being the hardest and most durable. Avoid spray lubricants. Good luck!
| Do we ALL have something wrong with us? | 1 Relevance | 19 years ago | whitespike | General discussion | |
| ... What makes us so involved with good design? Do we all have a predisposition to mental illness? I know I am diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder. It's something I've wrestled with and been medicated for on and off since childhood. It seems most creative types have something wrong with their physical mind. Would you think it was safe to say design addicts are no different? Are any of us typical? Normal? Have any of you been lucky enough (or unlucky enough, depending on your point of view) to obtain a life of stability and normalcy? | |||||

| . I used to be really relaxed about germs but after a couple of topical skin infections and other more serious problems I'm spraying bleach on counter tops and generally being an uptight housefrau. A bit of dirt is a good thing for a childs immune system but you really need to draw the line at any contact with faeces. Just a tip, always always wash your salad greens... Sorry to slide off topic here but if you've been diagnosed with IBS you should check this out, I'm all fixed but it took a couple of years to work it out. email me at hptempda@gmail.com if you ... | |||||
| Hats and brain cancer | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | Brent | General discussion | |
| Hats and brain cancer I knew a guy with brain cancer who liked to wear hats. Baseball hats were his favorite, but he also wore cowboy hats, football helmets and Italian cycling caps. When he was diagnosed with the tumor, of course we all woke up to the dangers of hats...but too late for my friend, unfortunately. | |||||

| A friend of mine has a 4 year... A friend of mine has a 4 year old. Both parents spend considerable time with her, including talking and sign language. I've notice her socials and language skills are above average. A friend of the family has a daughter that had been diagnosed with a mild form of Cerebral Palsy, which was proved wrong I believe and don't recall the details. Anyway, her language skills were slow in developing or not talking at all. The Doctor essentially prescribed sign-language. It works! No a cure-all, but certainly contributed. She ... | |||||

| You see? We get House, The... You see? We get House, The Wire, Madmen, Gen Kill, Sopranos etc from the US. We give you.......Dancing with the Stars! It's like a f..... up Marshall Plan in reverse. Incidentally has anyone number crunched House and analysed how often its either a) a brain tumour or b) exposure to an obscure (except to Hugh 'whats on the MRI' Laurie) toxic chemical? About 80% is my guess. If they'd only remember what they did last week they'd be a lot quicker diagnosing the next poor schmuck in a coma | |||||

Of course in 1971 there wasn't the same level of awareness on the hazards of smoking, although I think the original Marlboro Man had already been diagnosed with lung cancer, but this little factoid was kept very quiet. Ok enough of a rant. Big chunky heavy ashtrays make great dresser top or dressing room catch-alls for change, a watch, etc. But again are those incised lines and are they as crooked as they appear?

| ... for fastidious engineering and assembly, released a new Toyota Camry model (their bread and butter car in the States) which is reputedly considerably LESS fastidious than past models. What an amazing thing that a company that has steamrollered the world market with fabulously well assembled, and remarkably durable cars, at affordable prices would suddenly lose its way on its main model. Or take BMW, a car company that built a broad and fanatic following by being the ultimate driving machine--a wonder of mechanical engineering, really: they plunge headlong i ... | |||||
