| The distance Between Designer and Person Designed For Pt 9 The importance of what Koen is trying with his Atelier Orange products, and even with his collective design efforts here at DA, is to attempt to reduce the degrees of freedom between the designer and the person who will use it. I feel like a person when I look at the vase he gave me. I feel like a consumer when I look at the trash barrels he designs for a manufacturer. I am a complex human being. There is room in me to be both person and consumer for the good of the society and the efficiency of the ... | |||||

| The distance Between Designer and Person Designed For Pt 6 The designer, as has every other professional, has also gone from being one who could master all or most of the process of the design, production, financing, distribution and marketing of goods to someone who has to specialize in one aspect of the above, and who even has to specialize in designing and letting some one else render with CAD what has been designed. In short, the designers exists now out of a rise in specialization. Koen is that rare designer today who actually makes and sells things, t ... | |||||

| The distance Between Designer and Person Designed For Pt 3 And when the bike and then the car came along the consumer began to be a person who's spatial linkages among home, work, shopping and recreation drastically changed. And this change of spatial access fed into, unintentionally at first and then intentionally later, a very old property rights infrastructure dating back several centuries, one that had been created to buy and routize the loyalty of the upper classes and feudal lords originally. The convergence of the mobility of the car technology/infras ... | |||||

| The distance Between Designer and Person Designed For Pt 1 Looking at the "isms" and "movements" to understand the consumer's place in design in the 20th century is certainly one approach to the analysis. But it is a bit like Plato's metaphor of looking at the shadows on the wall of the cave. One sees the silhouette of the fire, but not the fire itself. I'm big on going straight to the fire, when the fire is accessible. To me, the individual's consuming characteristics, at any time in history, represent a trade off between a quest to satisfy basic needs and ... | |||||

| Wraps and distances So the first piece of cane goes across and then gets wrapped five times wraps below below. And the next piece of cane goes across two wraps below the first. Which means the second cane is covering the bottom three wraps of the first. This seems odd to me, but seems an inevitable conclusion from the photo. And it means that the bottom three wraps and tag end don't have to be incredibly tight since the next cane down will squeeze them tight. So imagine: -Start on the left with the tag end wrapped tight under the wraps since you can go over ... | |||||

| TUGENDHAT LOUNGE ARMCHAIRS...To my distant friends who share a "Love" and appreciation for Mid Century work. CONTINUATION OF LAST MESSAGE:Supposedly this may be a way to determine if these chairs were manufactured and built in Europe or here in the United States. Does this make sense to you as serious collectors of Mies Van Der Rohe furniture? I did in fact measure the "Back-rest" but I am not sure if the measurement should be taken from the "Outside" or "Inside" of the steel frame. Can anyone offer some guidance and or suggestions to further "Authenticate" ... | |||||

| pluralism or distilation It seems that the focus of interest, lies with the international modern classics, barc etc.Regionilism is perhaps more "important" or allowed in postmodernism or neo modern. On the down side much of postmodern takes great old forms and "jokes" them up,rather than distills them to their essence. | |||||

| Ditto on the leather. With no exposed stitching to degrade, it could last a lifetime. If you must put dressing on it, be careful that any product you may choose does not contain petroleum distillates or solvents of any kind and use it very sparingly. I'm all about keeping my stuff in good condition, but what's the point of having nice old things if they've been made to look brand-new? | |||||
