Look for a wool fabric by Kvadrat, Maharam, or Knoll. There are plenty of other companies too, but if you start with them you will probably better be able to pick out appropriate fabrics from others.

Kvadrat's Hallingdal is an impeccable choice. And for a Fried Egg, you will need to pick something that stretches around curves well.

Quality upholstery fabric is not cheap.

I would recommend Tonus by Kvadrat/Maharam. A lot of the curvy Danish chairs were done in this. It has a little bit of elastic fiber in the weave which gives it some stretch and makes fitting it to the curves a little easier. It also comes in lots of colors so you should be able to find a combo that you like.

Keep an eye on the stock at Modern-Fabrics.com for this and other high end Danish fabrics. They sell mill ends and often have lengths well over what you would need for this chair. Colors will be hit or miss but if you have more patience than cash, it can be worth the wait. Their prices are below wholesale. Sign up for their weekly newsletters, that way you can easily stay up to date, though the really great stuff might get snapped up immediately.

Ebay is a pretty good source too, though Tonus doesn't come up as often as Hallingdal. Hallingdal is great but it's scratchy, even through light clothing (if you're one of the many who find wool to be scratchy, that is---not everyone does).

Are thinking about doing this yourself? It's not exactly a beginner project. In fact, a lot of professional upholsterers screw this type of chair up.

Hi.

Consider using the same textile for both the chair and the seat cushion*. A friend had her fried egg chair recovered in a charcoal Hallingdal, and I must say...it looks divine.

* two-tone would be too predictable on this chair, methinks.

But then, hi

Aunt Mark

Thanks for all the responses! I think I'm going to go with the Kvadrat. I'll be giving it to an upholsterer, I couldn't dream of doing it.

And I'm sorry Mark, I think I'm going to go with a light cream body and a dark blue on the seat 🙂 - gotta get it ready for the Hamptons.

Kvadrat is a Danish fabric mill that produces a number of fabrics (wools and plenty of synthetics too)--did you mean Hallingdal or Tonus? I looked at Modern-Fabrics.com and Ebay after I listed and both have a bunch of Tonus listed, which is rare. Or used to be rare, anyway. Ebay doesn't have any Hallingdal listings at the moment but Modern-Fabrics has a bunch---some very nice neutrals, too.

I like the mono theme too, except---guilty secret, so this does not leave this room---I kind of like white for the chair and deep yellow for the seat cushion. In a pop art kind of way, of course. Which wouldn't work in my home at all so there's no danger of me actually doing it (not to mention I don't own one of these chairs).

I don't see why it should be a dark secret that one likes the Fried Egg in its nickname colors. It got that name for a reason.

Just got the samples in from Maharam. I totally see what Spanky is saying between the Tonus and the Hallingdal, the Hallingdal is a little scratchy, I'm going to go with the Tonus, feels nice and soft 🙂

Leif- In all the the pictures I looked up of this chair online, I have never seen one with a white body and a yellow seat. Of course it makes sense that is where the name comes from, but you wouldn't even know it these days. I thought the form alone inspired the name. Love the Pop Art vibe but the yellow won't fit in my room either.

Yeah, I didn't see any white/yellow combos when I looked but I've seen at least one in the past! (I was joking about it being a guilty secret, for the record! I do have pretty definite tastes but at this point in my life I'm quite secure about straying from them, too.)

Here's one that's kinda close to what i remember seeing, though this one is definitely more of a mustard yellow and not egg yolk yellow:
