Hi everybody,

Recently I bought two Herman miller shell chairs with Low H base, Fehlbaum productions to restore.

Not really sure what the specific color name is of these.

After stripping some nasty white paint of the shells I would like to clean out some areas of fibers.

I think the shells stayed out for some time which caused some dirt in the areas were the shock mounts are on the seat. Advise would be highly appreciated!

The picture shows what the chair looks like right now, they were covered in 3 layers of old white paint, including the base. I'm thinking of powder coating the base in a satin black.

Hi davidehol, just looking at the images you posted, it looks like the fiberglass still has a decent (?) amount of sheen on it, the color is a bit uneven but that is expected on the older shells that had use. Is it the translucent kind or the later opaque fiberglass? Maybe it just needs a fiberglass gel coat to freshen it up a bit. There are several posts here at DA to do this just use the search thing at the top.

If it is an older or early version, if these chairs are mine, I will do the least amount of restoration/conservation on these, but this is your call. The chair may not look perfect but these flaws makes your chairs unique compared to the new reissued versions.

Also, are those holes on the seat? If they are, those will require fiberglass material like the ones used for repairing boats, tinting or matching the color requires a good eye, or you could do a version with upholstered seat.
