I'm using
I'm using "Golden Oak" because most of the lacquer finish on the piece is presently toasted a deep amber color. Looked at the piece this morning after the Restorafinish dried totally: the color is only slightly darker, and has a little more sheen to it. Actually looks pretty good. I may sand lightly before applying in large areas because it just coats whats already there. My guess is the most dramatic change will be on the armrests. Will post Before & After pics of that too. Trying to get it done ASAP because the weather's about to change here and I don't want this finish stinking up my house.
Also - the papercord seat is structurally very sound, but the topside is bleached out. Looks the same grey color as driftwood. I think I'm going to apply a mixture of soap flakes to clean/condition it. I'm also thinking about adding some colorant - maybe walnut ink - to the mix to bring the color back to the naturally flax color that it is on the underside. Thoughts?
According to
According to the recipe on Soap-flakes.com I can use a more concentrated solution for the cord seat. I've been using it on the wishbones with no problems.
Just glued up the rocker and the armrest. Sorry SDR - I'm not feeling skilled enough to saw/glue a spline into the crack on the surface of the armrest.
Tomorrow morning I'm going to take some 'before' pictures of the worn spots, then Restore-A-Finish.
Chair is finished
Structurally, at least. The glued up joints are holding.
I think Howards Restore-A-Finish has a new convert. It's pretty amazing - the worn surfaces look exactly the same as the places left intact. I also buffed a coat of Howards Feed'n'Wax on as well..that didnt seem to do very much. But the Restore-A-Finish was great.
Now for the tricky part. I soaped the HELL out of the seat. It feels clean and sturdy, but the color is still bleached/faded. And there is an odd orange stain right where the sitters buttcrack would be.
Spanky - you said this was a tricky chair to re-weave...how tricky? I'm thinking the chair would look smashing in a black corded seat. Any others attempted this type of weave?
Will post photos in a few hours.
