Hey, remember Rush Limbaugh?
He used the exact same template as Trump is using now.
Start aggressively with thinly veiled race-baiting, and extremist statements that offend just about everyone, and then begin to "soften the tone" and downplay it all once you have thrown enough "red meat" to the base, and need to move to the center in an attempt to become mainstream.
Problem is, he's offended too much of the electorate in ways that they won't soon forget.
Women, hispanics, immigrants, disabled people, war vets…. the list goes on.
Thats already about 75% of the population!

I have to laugh; it's become a running joke at the PBS NewsHour, where "conservative" David Brooks has predicted for at least six months that Donald Trump will meet his end "any day now"
. . . and on and on he goes, undeterred. The smart money seems to be on those who note that Trump's competition have put off their attacks too long -- frozen, perhaps, like a deer in the literally incredible glare of his fog-lamps ?

I guess it's hard to take the high road while Trump keeps getting paid (with ratings and coverage) for the low blows. His rallies are scary and disturbing. Kind of reminds me of Hitler's rallies.
Yeah, I know I probably sound much worse (or god forbid - more boring - than that guy on PBS!
But apparently I still agree with that PBS guy.
Trump may manage to totally screw up (uh, I mean "win") his party's nomination, but I still have faith in the process. I know it's a novel idea, but I don't think making i-phones in the USA is a realistic solution for American woes. The sad thing is that he KNOWS this can not possibly work, but he continues to sell it because nobody seems to be able to get him to answer any push-back questions when he floats this shit.
"His people" just don't seem to care about the little things…. like who would buy a $10,000 i-phone if it were made in the states. I know all those old white people (and their kids) would relish the chance to pick tomatoes and lettuce when we sent everyone back across the border.
HE KNOWS where we get all of our cheap labor and vegetables, and he knows who is driving our economy. He is supposedly a businessman.
But he's not talking to anyone with a brain. Yet.
So wonderful that he is plain spoken and genuine. But when do we get to consider content?
What about the words that come out of his mouth?
But he has such nice hair.

To me, his traction is proof that a broad swath of Americans, besides being marginalized and having their wages stagnant for decades (the American Dream isn't for everyone, it turns out), have also become dumb as a bag of rocks -- a product of our low standard of eduction and of who knows what other faults and causes. Record low voter turnout is one regrettable symptom; another is apparently an inability to recognize crap when they see it.
Fortunately, we have the Bad Reporter to explain everything to us . . .

I think you summed it up very well SDR.
Somewhere along the line we all forgot that underfunding public education for years on end eventually would "come home to roost" in a democracy that depends on educated voters.
Even if we dodge the bullet this time around, we can probably look at this as as a little preview of that swath you speak of.
Watching "The Apprentice" now qualifies as vetting a candidate.

the ship has clearly left the shore.
the USA's demographics have changed dramatically, and it is a modern world now.
too much work to do, and so many people with good ideas won't be kept down.
it's too late for trump, and those like him.
the old white right, while still quite vocal, is marginalized and dying off very quickly.
putting aside the "swath" of deep-south republicans, the USA will no longer accept "backwards".
an interconnected world with complex issues deserves better from the USA, and they will get it.
the brightest in his own party works against him.
they know he's a gimmick, and a sure loser.
it's gonna get ugly.
grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.
because that is all it is.

Yes SDR, here's Donny indeed!
the gaping maw of the 24 hour news cycle requires it's daily protester punch-out.
gotta keep those clicks and advertising dollars coming in.
anything resembling substantial discourse about the reality of a trump presidency is handily obfuscated by the drama of fights.
fights get more clicks for a lazy media (and by lazy voters)
the trump crowd loves their grassroots power, but when anybody ELSE wants to speak up, all this "outsider freedom of speech" crap goes straight into the toilet.
RE surpassing the 6 year old's need for attention:
I do find myself wondering just how addicted he is to the spotlight. What might he do to stay in the headlines? I don't think he even wants to be the president. He just wants the stage, and have his 15 minutes of fame. How far will an addict go to keep this high going?
Pretty far.

My fantasy is that the Donald gets elected and runs the country for 6 months---long enough to do some worldwide damage and make an utter FOOL of himself for real, not just in bloviating talk---and then we kick him out (and this is the part where fantasy really takes over) we rewind and start over on election day with someone else.
It would have to be the whole thing, obviously.

The whole thing would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad, and scary . . .
We wouldn't have this if we hadn't had Palin, and Schwarzenegger, and Hulk Hogan, and Ronald Reagan. At least that's my theory.
