too many years ago I rescued a desk that I later learnt was an Arne Vodder 219 Model for Sibast. The sideboard element is the one with the sliding door and drop down door with the discreet compartment at the end and has been a much loved addition to the house. The desk element I have kept in storage because......there was never a desk top. It's now time to marry the two together elements together. Any suggestions? Should I hold out for a lonely Arne Vodder desk top floating somewhere in the universe? Has someone else found the top that belongs to my model? Should I fake it with some other top?

If you can find the same type and quality of wood I don't see any problem with doing it.

Hold out
for the original but I would cut a cheap piece of MDF/ply and either veneer or paint for now just to get it out of storage and in use. Great piece of furniture.

I second Sixpence
Use it or lose it. Life's short, it's rather a long-shot that you'll ever happen upon a specific stray desk top.

You could probably wait your entire life for a "matching" top to appear. That said, even if you did find the right one....it might not even match (due to variations in wood, exposure to light, etc.) I also think trying to craft a top that "matches" is the wrong approach. I'd consider a nice solid wood or maybe fin ply with a laminate top.... black or white....maybe even a color like tomato red or orange......

Right on Jesgord!
White or orange laminate will look fine. Or a thick piece of frosted glass.

settled
wow! what can I say? If there were emoticons on the forum I'd be adding them in profusion. Jesgord an ingeniously simple suggestion and I may even have just the right material for the job. Being an inveterate collector I once also picked up some very cool lemon yellow kind of frosted glass material from a fifties shop interior, the name of it escapes me right now..... and have been holding on to it waiting for a use. I really like the ply idea and I should be able to glue the..... there it is.......Vitrolite....... ok so it wont have the warm feel of the wood but it'll pick up on the coloured set of drawers in the 'credenza'. In fact the desk shon on decopedia when you zoom in on it looks like it may be a replacement the colour seems way off.
So, hands up who r e a l l y hates the idea?

Don't hate the idea but I think charcoal corian or stone (slate?) would look better, the glued on edge of a formica top have always set me off, then again I've stuck hundreds of the things together.
Sorry, glasses on now, vitrolite, yeah nice stuff, I've got 4 sheets of the white stuff that I'm hanging onto but am yet to find a use for. You could have some solid wood edges stained to match for the ply but maybe thats getting a bit too much.
