I saw this doucmentary last night and all i can say is give it ***** 5 stars cause it was great
Any one who is a real design addict will want to see this film as it truly traces the delieberate destruction and Hitlers sick mind for thirst for art
and of course power for a HITLER world,
It talks how he hated modern ART (sick bastard) and the modern artist that he wanted their work out of his beloved Germany, go see if if you have a chance,

The Rape of Europa tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe?s art treasures during the Third Reich and the Second World War.

In a journey through seven countries, the film takes the audience into the violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. For twelve long years, the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. But young art professionals as well as ordinary heroes, from truck drivers to department store clerks, fought back with an extraordinary effort to safeguard, rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden and stolen treasures.

The Rape of Europa begins and ends with the story of artist Gustav Klimt?s famed Gold Portrait, stolen from Viennese Jews in 1938 and now the most expensive painting ever sold.

Today, more than sixty years later, the legacy of this tragic history continues to play out as families of looted collectors recover major works of art, conservators repair battle damage, and nations fight over the fate of ill-gotten spoils of war.

Joan Allen narrates this breathtaking chronicle about the battle over the very survival of centuries of western culture.

Does art and design have anything to do with each other?

Sorry.....LRF, I don't quite see the connection.
But, on a related note, Hitler's insanity meant that most of the best German Bauhaus designers moved to the US....and Germany's loss was the US's gain.

The connection is monumental
Hitler not only saw that the Bauhaus was wiped out early
They got the hint and left on there own as they knew what was going on,
But when anyone (Hitler ) tries to control your thinking and thought process and robbing you of life's beauty and culture, we all become effected.
I am sorry that you can not see any connection between the movie and what it relates to this forum, that you, for one, so much enjoy,
i presume you
enjoy modern design , modern furniture, I hope modern art,
Well this person thought that it was not in your best interest and the rest of the worlds best interest for you to enjoy this phony, stupid, no talent art movement,
It was for weirdos, gypsy, and hate to say it homosexuals,
Still see no connection to this movie, to this forum?

20th Century Modern design and the fascist movement
No question that there is a connection between the Fascist insanity of the 1930's influencing and being somewhat related to the European Modernist movement.
Many of the better designers were also architects and urban planners, and there WAS a relationship between totalitarian politics and the clean, somewhat impersonal urban planning and design style.
Heck, one of the giants of American modern architecture, Phillip Johnson, had a period of his life when he was directly involved with the American Fascist movement. He moved on, but he was involved.
As a Gay Jew, I chose to separate wonderful clean modern furniture and archetecture design from the vintage negative politics of that day.
In a similar fashion, I choose not to dwell on the fact that that wartime technology was the basis for many of Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen's materials used for their wonderful furniture.
No big deal, but only if I were teaching a course on 20th Century modern design would I go into the political and wartime connections.

i am
confused about the reactions to lrf's suggestion to watch this documentary. one, it is just a nice heads up, and two, this subject has everything to do with modern design i think. the industrial revolution, politics and art to name three were huge shapers of modern design. i had the good fortune to take a 20th century design course recently, and these were the dominant themes used to establish a context for modern design unfolding the way it has. i have to run, sorry to cut this short. bill

YOU CAN NOT FORGET !!!! you may forgive but you never can forget!!! and I am surprised that you would take that approach and use that statement, how do you know where you are going when you do not know where you are coming from...
It relates to all things present Barry not just viewing a 2 hour movie of destruction of art and world culture as we know it, but what we were at the brink of destruction,
This deally bob that we call a Forum headed under the words design forum, would not have exsisted
cause modern would have been wiped out in Europe,
This is not a public service announcement and demand to see this movie . It is good, and for all who enjoy what modern is;
It could have all been just a thought if one person had his way,
Also Barry .. This is one more reason you should see this movie, as a Jew .
To see how They took precious objects like torah scrolls and hardware that fit on top of the torah,
Menorahs, and other sacred items, and destroyed not only them but other items from Italy and other capitals of Europe, just cause they wanted too....

I am glad that you understand and for the life of me i do not know why this subject hits me so hard in the face,
Barry I am sure you are a real nice person but as a Gay Person you for one know that people are prejudice toward you ,
As a Jewish person I personally know that people are prejudice toward me ,
I lead my life like I want and I hope every one has the good fortune to be able to lead their life like they want, no matter of there sexual orintation or Religious beliefs,
But folks out there in Design land There is a whole lot more to this whole thing then cool chairs from the 50's and 60's and a hip buzz word " "I like mid century modern,"
This is a ideology, a way of life , and a thinking process, some people get it, some only get the pretty and cool furniture, but sometimes somethings call for a little deeper thinking,
I have a feeling that some out there will agree with me.

Wow...just what have people been putting in their morning coffee lately??
LRF, I've not whatch the film you mention but I can't fail to seethe connection of it to Design. I can't understand why others can't see it.
And remember, "those who forget History are doomed to repeat it." Churchill said that, I think.
