I'm from the US. When I went to the UK, I, of course, knew that the traffic was keep left. but I expected the sidewalk walking patterns, as well as the escalators to run on the keep-left principle, but surprise, the walking and escalator patterns are keep-right, the same as the US.

Wonder why?

wow, in Australia we drive on the left but I had to cast my mind back to think about escalator behaviour (its so laid back where I live people just sort of amble around and stand wherever, why walk up something thats already moving?) but actually here its left, I think its because the natural place to stand is on the left but when someone wants to move past you the only thing to do is sidestep right, you unblock the flow by moving right and its become cemented from that, maybe. Footpath behaviour here is definitely left.
Who knows how this consensus is reached?

Drive on
Drive on the the left
Walk on the left, stationary on the right
Is it really that odd ?

Barry says its the other way in the UK, Australia has followed English models mostly, but I can't remember tube station escalators that well, too self absorbed and or drunk at the time I expect.
Its got something to with how you mounted a horse that the left is preferable, I'm not sure why the Americans changed over, I think the Swedes go on the right too. I bet Koen knows.

In the UK
We stand on the right, and walk up on the left

but when Thatcher was around you walked on the right no?
Maybe when Obama gets in there'll be a footpath revolution.

I've never read so much...
I've never read so much indignation in so few words, very funny!
Did she really once say "Blair was my finest creation"? Frightening woman.

And now some say that the Iron Lady in her current state
is at times not even aware that she was PM. The person who figures out Alzheimer's will absolutely have the world's gratitude.

In
my city, at least, pedestrians no longer make way for each other on the sidewalk or (I assume) in highrise hallways and elsewhere. I suppose if there weren't lines on the roads (and traffic laws) drivers would express anarchy there as well. . .
Sorry -- not a relevant observation, I guess.
Is it like this where you are, too ?

If she can't remember who she was she can't feel any guilt for all the apalling things she did.
Where I live strangers still say hello on passing in the street or the park so its lovely in that way but I do miss the anonynimity of a city.
