Cast your eyes over the catalogues from Italian design company LAGO and try and tell me why these are not the best modular systems in production. Not only are they extremly well crafted, excellent value for money and highly versatile but i also believe they are conceptionally one of the finest examples of modular furniture on the market.
hey M_Andersen, glad you seem...
hey M_Andersen, glad you seem to be as impressed by them as i am. I am a retailer and have been selling design lead furniture and products for quite a few years, as well as having studied furniture, product and tableware design. Its a real joy to sell the Lago range as every aspect can be tailored to the clients needs and desires.
They where also my personal highlight of this years Salone Internazionale del Mobile (Milan). I personally felt that there was a lack of creative vision at this years show, with a lot of the big names producing the same old stuff, stand after stand looking alarmingly similar to the one before.
BTW whats your homepage url?
As with any modular system,...
As with any modular system, its difficult to give a ball park figure due to how many variables are available, the material, finishes, weather you choose doors or drawers, interior lighting, cable management systems etc. But as an example, composition 21 featured in the 36e8 catalogue (p22-23), retails for around £3000 +vat, which in comparison to other "branded" furniture systems is very reasonable. Considering its a hand build, customised solution. All Lago products are available in 25 colours, 5 veneers.
Hello jonnymiller.
Oh,...
Hello jonnymiller.
Oh, you bet I'm impressed. The Soft wood bench, the Yang/Diamante bed, the Air system - they're all amazing with a capital A! It's right up my alley. Though too bad there are so many broken links in the English version of their homepage. And I would love to see some more pictures of the Soft Wood bench, esp. of it being used. The idea behind it is really clever and one of the best designs I've seen in months.
I don't have a homepage (yet), but as soon as I'm close to being finish with my portfolio, I will show my fellow design addicts some drawings/illustrations of my work.
some pictures
Found these images proud owners have posted of their own Lago creations

Thank you
Jonnymiller, thank you for the LAGO link. I have been wondering what strange company this was, ever since seeing that picture in a magazine with the sumo wrestling like guy on the floating bed. I think the photo is funny and sweet. ANd that floating LAGO bed really rocks my world. (Could you perhaps tell me what price this would approx be ?)
If you love LAGO (hell, I surely do), there is another company that distributes a similar modular line, called Pastoe. But their collection is not as comprehensive and large, and perhaps also a little less flexible than the LAGO line. Still, you might like their modular elements. Esp. the wall units with pop open mechanism are impressive IMHO.

Softwood Bench
The softwood bench is a great concept, I love its play on perceptions and it's one of the first pieces that caught my attention when i was introduced to Lago.
The bench is cushioned with a thin layer of what i assume to be dense foam, to which a layer of veneered tiles are glued, but like you finch i was concerned about the nipping factor. It wasn't till i saw one first hand that i was able to thoroughly test it out. But for all my efforts i was unable to inflict any physical danage to my hands or foreams (the softest skin available, i considered droping my trousers but figured that would get me thrown out). I'm not saying that you wouldnt get the odd nip, but wheather its the size or thickness of the tiles, the depth of the foam, their relative distance or a clever combination of all four it works.
It comes in two lengths 1.2 and 1.6m with a width 60cm. 5 veneers, or in a lacquered finish in 25 different colors. In my personal opinion the veneer is by far the superior option. As far as i can recollect the veneered 1.6m retails for around £750 but i'd need to check that.
Ite, the Pastoe catalougue is beautiful, although i did see them in Milan and i have to say that their stand didn't do their full product range justice.
Finch, sorry don't know where the bedding is from, i presume you are talking about the amazing orange throw on the Yang bed, if anyone knows id be very interested myself
Found some more pictures of the softwood bench, and i'll check the prices tomorrow
Anyone out there not like it?

Modular, but we need portable
When one reads the phrase, "Modular furniture..." it is easy to envision portable furniture that can be assembled easily, then disassembled, shipped to a new location and re-assembled in a variety of formats to suit the site.
Given that the average "professional" can expect to move over ten times during their working years, there should be more options among "modular furniture" to provide light, easy to disassemble/assemble furniture, that is as much functional as it is beautiful.
