S stands for Summit
The name of the company is Summit (a.k.a. Summit Polymers Inc. Injection Molded Thermoplastics), of Kalamazoo, Michigan. This logo is sometimes accompanied by a Circle-S, or an ink stamp with the word Summit.
Like Zenith (checkerboard label) and Cincinnati Millicron (embossed C with star in center), Summit was one of the companies contracted by HM to make Eames fiberglass shells. Cincinnati Millicron also manufactured the fiberglass parts for George Nelson's MAAs and DAFs.

thanks for the info... I never noticed it, someone ask me about that symbol and i always try to find out , Now I wonder why HM who gave up the business of makeing shell chairs did not contract with someone to make their chairs currently like Modernica or some third world manafacture they gave that up completly and farmed it out to Vitra ,
I always thought that they were made them in Zealand but now i know.
Having known, how they make those chairs with those fiberglass fibers flying everywhere ( I bet they are so Carcinogenic) They more than likely did not want them made in their factories do to liability purposes.
That would have been the perfect product to farm out . calling China...
