Slunkskin....
....was one of the original upholstery options offered by the Eames, first with Evans, then with Herman Miller.
"Slunk skin upholstery was available only by special order from 1948 to 1953."

To quote this leather dealer.....
"We offer a limited selection of chrome-tanned, unborn, or prematurely born calf skins, often called either slink skins or slunk skins. The hide side is soft and supple. See below for our GALLERY of skins in stock, and more notes on sizes and uses. Our website is updated most days, so the information below is generally up to date.
We have three categories of unborn calf skins:
1) Small (early stage fetus with very, very short hair) - We do not usually stock these as they are very small--only one or two square feet. We can get some on a custom-order basis, but please allow up to two months.
2) Medium (medium stage fetus with very short hair) - These are usually in stock. The medium skins have very short hair (about 1/4") and almost appear to be sheared. The skin is very fine and soft. The vast majority are solid black, but we do get a limited number of black and white or brown and white skins. The skins average only 2-3 square feet.
3) Large (late stage unborn calves with longer hair, up to 3/4")."
Since slunkskin hides are obviously still readily available, I was wondering if this reissue remains true to its roots.

I saw that exact chair (in the 1st photo) a few hours ago at Mobilia, (a furniture chain) downtown. Looked like a substantial piece of furniture. But the fact that it was marked down to $300, and not much more originally ($500 perhaps), makes me think it might be a repro, if they were originally $2k. The store also had the ECW without the calfskin, the Eileen grey table, Wassily chair, and numerous other MCM icons. Myself, I'm an animal lover and couldn't imagine the idea of having the skin of an animal as my furnishings, as it looks gross. But as someone who appreciates design, I still don't like the idea. The whole calfskin look seems like a cliche to me. A yuppie thing, if you will. I'd prefer the classic wood model, given the choice.
