Hello!

I found this armchair for 40,00 Euros, is it worth it? Could it be designer? ( I haven't seen it up close). I was thinking paper cord would look fantastic on her.

Thank you for your replies.

I‘ve never seen it, but go for it if you like it.  Could become a project. But the frame is quite thin for weaving papercord the Danish way. You need space for the L-nails. It might work here but you also might get in trouble. I think, cane would be better.

Thank you! I found a technique for weaving paper cord without the nails here http://www.modernchairrestoration.com/2016/05/how-to-do-the-looped-warp-weave-on-yugoslavian-folding-chair/

It will keep me busy for quite a while.

Nice, please post the pic once you finished weaving paper.

Looks like this is the page of our friend @spanky which is definitely a good one to refer to. I've never done this type of weaving so I can't give any further advice. But maybe Spanky can, if needed.

Hi there-

The weave you found on my blog will indeed work on this chair but maybe first try to determine what was on there originally...?  I see what looks like a little bit of cord or cane in the lower left corner of the back.  There are also shadow marks from the original material on some of the rails.  A clear closeup of these points may help to ID the original stuff.

(obviously, make sure you deal with all of the issues with the frame before weaving:  open joints, extremely dry wood, gray/black stains, etc.  Which you probably plan to do; I just mention it because others who see this in the future may be less experienced and might plunge ahead and then find it's way more work to fix the other stuff once the weaving is done.)

It’s always a good idea to ask Spanky.

3 images below of Yugoslavian rocking chair, which show good detail of weave. So you can have some idea of a finished chair.

@herringbone oh my what a surprise! @spanky is quite the legend here and I've been obsessed with this blog for quite a long time! I am picking up the chair tomorrow so I'll soon know what I'm dealing with. Indeed I plan to fully restore the wood/frame before I start with the weaving.

@lexi these are some really good images and thank you for sharing.

and honestly thank you all, I am a newbie and your input (everything I read here) is highly appreciated. I currently have a room filled with "projects" that were laboriously collected for my home...so baby steps and lots of research.

@gooniepurr Seems that we can answer your questions now. It‘s Illum Wikkelsø for Niels Eilersen. And 40 Euros are okay. https://bruun-rasmussen.dk/m/lots/15FAEDE8B493?auction_day_id=1006185

I am considering buying this same chair, and in doing some research came across this original catalog entry. It's hard to say for sure, but it looks like this chair has cane, not danish cord. That isn't to say it wasn't offered both ways.

I translated the text...this is binder cane, and obviously black. Again, that isn't to say there weren't other options.

do you think binder cane would last longer with two cats in the house?  😆

My chair used to have paper cord. The original nails are still on the frames.

Definitely. My cat very occasionally will stretch on one of the many corded chairs in the house, but has never come close to putting his claws on anything with cane.
