everyone who collects these clocks looks for the missing "second hand" (it's red, fyi). they are often missing. and when they show up at all, it's usually on eBay, and i've seen a single one go for $150 and up.
i've never tried this, but you could try to cannibalize a lesser clock you find somewhre and see if that clock's second hand fits yours. I've noticed that the old Howard Miller second hands look just like the second hands used on many non-HM clocks from the 40s and 50s, and have often wondered whether they'd fit on a HM clock. Since most of these clocks cost no more than $15 or $20 at a flea market, it might be worth a try.
Your friendly neighborhood beachcomber suggests:
A thin wooden coffee-stirring stick (approx. 1/8 inch by whatever length you want to trim it to) with a coat of red nail polish should do it just fine. Worked for me.
