@andersen This photo, which is shown on thechieftainchair.com, gives a good image of the original chair which has been in Oda's collection. I'm still not sure, but it looks as if the legs were made of oak and the armrests and "feet" were made of teak. Maybe the feet are even brass?  What's also evident is that the holes go all the way through the metal plate. Note to @tktoo2 I'd rather not use any of them as an ashtray.

One can't imagine snuffing out a cigarette on the exposed bare wood recess under that ingenious hinged brass (bronze?) tray (though we've had guests - never mind our kids and/or their friends - do inexplicable things here in the past).

Thank you, @herringbone for posting the closeup. Though I remain unconvinced that mixed wood components are illustrated here, I'll defer to expert opinion.

Feet, ferrules, or sabots? Guessing brass or bronze here, too, as the color seems to match that of the folding drinks tray. On the HoJ iteration, who knows?

This chair design is growing on me. If I were lucky enough to own one (with olive leather, please), I'd be happy to grow on it!

@tktoo2 Since I neither smoke nor drink Whiskey, I‘d happily renounce in your favor.
We have a Tuck table with oak legs and teak top. The contrast looks similar. But I‘m far from convinced either.

@herringbone, From what I've seen, oak tends to darken over time (oil will accelerate this) while most teak tends to go the other way especially when exposed to strong UV light.

I'd love to see contrast of the two on your table!

FWIW, I pretty much abstain from either myself anymore.  If I should make it to 90 by some stroke (sorry!) of bad luck, I plan to take up both again with enthusiasm!

I would say legs are oak and feet is brass. So is there any indication walnut was ever used specifically for this chair ? If not, then HoFJ just did not do it right, sorry.

@Andersen Only three of them were ever made. So no, walnut had never been used on them. But I don't think that's the point really. It's very common to use different wood species with reissues, And I don't see a problem in it, taking into account that a piece of furniture might be artistical but it is not a piece of art per se. It's also a utilitarian object that is subject to fashion. I believe that manufacturers should be alowed to meet the damands of today's world, at least to a certain extent. Chairs can be made a bit higher, there can be improvement in construction technique and there also may be a rethinking of wood. Walnut for instance is way more popular today than teak which is not only due to aesthetic but also to  financial reasons. But it's still a comparable luxurious hard wood. As long as the quality of the work is on par with what was sold back in the day, it works for me. But maybe that's just me.

Hi @Herringbone. In principle I agree with you, it's not a big deal. From my perspective, if they make this huge effort to resurrect a design of this caliber, well, then they should at least also offer it with the original wood choice. The price asked would justify it, and at this level there should not be compromise. Probably they do not target people that care about these datails as those who populate this forum, maybe. Thanks for your thoughts !!
