After sourcing some original cushions and buying a set of new shock mounts I had all of the verneer repaired (filled and painted) I hope you agree the chair now looks fantastic and original. Very pleased to bought the chair back from the dead which I'm sure will give me a nice comfortable lounger for many more years!
The chairs an early Hille for Herman Miller edition. Anyone else had some nice success stories?
The rewards out way the cost
you did good !!!! the chair looks great....... I bought one on ebay for $1200.00 plus 150.00 to ship it. with ottoman, it came broken bad shock mounts, owner knew just failed to disclose it .. but that turned out ok as it would have broken sooner or later, .. and some idiot had drilled holes in the side to try to mend it . I bought new shock mounts and had them installed and had the chair refinished and filled the holes, I changed the old black leather to a beautiful cream spinneybeck leather,
I loved redoing this chair rather than going out buying a new one. (at the end of the day, I more than likely could have bought a new one a little cheaper but I did enjoy redoing this. and it was the springboard to me starting my company Retro Redo.
Any time you can rescue any thing from a vintage chair to a classic car to a stray dog or cat go for it !!! The rewards outway the cost !!!!

Mine have the exact same tags 🙂
You'd think the Hille pieces would be very sought after in the UK comapred to Herman Miller or Vitra as they would have been supplied here from new rather than being imported
Its fuuny to see "commonwealth" on the tag gives it a real period feel,
Are you based in the UK also?

Hello Pete,
I agree with you although HM editions do seem to command higher prices. IMO I would prefer a Hille example. I'm based in Sussex, where are you?
I actually run a shop selling mid 20th century design although I do collect myself, mainly danish design from Juhl/Wegner. You collect Eames?
I didnt know Hille made the 670 671, learn something new everyday!
I thought that i knew almost every thing about Herman Miller.
Some one even asked if I work for the company,
Can any one tell me about how long Hille made the chairs.. what years .... and
did any one else besides Vitra make the chairs for Eames in Europe . I have always heard there was a European chair and somethings were different( I heard the zippers were different on the cushions and tucked in ) but now I know thanks for letting me know ..

Nice job....I once had some eiffel base DAR's (price £16 in 1962) with the same HM / Hille label - I've always presumed that Hille assembled their Eames range from parts supplied by HM, possibly the upholstery on the 670/671 was done entirely in England? I can't see how even a biggish company like Hille would go to the expense of 'tooling up' to make the range entirely in England?
As for LRF's comment about the Queen - I did once hear that there is a room in Buckingham Palace which was entirely done in the 'contemporay style' in the 1950s. I don't think its ever been opened to the public tho' - and even if it was my republican leanings would prevent me from paying money to go and see it...

I dont know if you watched it but there was a great programme on BBC4 recently called thoroughly modern antiques one of the programmes featured furniture form the mid century period, it was very well done and a great watch, it concentrated mainly on the British designers such as Robin Day but it did touch on other countries hopefully it will be repeated at some stage
I will be looking to purchase a lounge chair and ottoman towards the end of this year if you ever have one for sale Id love to see it

Hille & Herman Miller
Hille had a license from Herman Miller to make some of their chairs in the late 1950s (1958 I think). Not sure how long they had it for though. I've also got some of the fibreglass side chairs with the same Hille/Herman Miller sticker that i've been selling:
