Hello all,
I was told you could help me. Two years ago we bought a used "eames lounge chair" from 1st Dibs online for $2,600. It was shipped from Los Angeles to Boston. We're moving now and trying to resell it for $1800 on ... (edited by DA, no advertising for sales please). Someone responded that it was unequivocally a fake worth not more than $400! Can this be? Even it it is a "fake", it's in very good condition (and comfortable). Can someone verify it's a fake, and suggest a fair asking price?? Also, and suggestions as far as recourse to recoup our money from 1st Dibs who, I think, should know the difference between an authentic vs a fake eames given they specialize in modern/antique furniture sales!!! So irresponsible.
many thanks

of the Eames loungers on the page(s) linked below are the real thing. Look closely: the chair has metal bars connecting the headrest to the chair back; the chair does not have bolts visible below the armrest.
Your chair has the headrest mounted with wood bars, at a position higher than correct. In one photo your headrest seems to be mounted crooked.

The base of your chair (and of the ottoman) is a lot nicer than most knockoffs. It's hard to tell from your photos, but you might have a chair built by the Charlton company.
Charlton made a couple of variations on the Eames lounge, and they used a base that looked just like yours. I can't say for sure that your chair is a Charlton, however, since I haven't seen one with exactly your chair's details. For example... The original Eames chair had metal headrest mounts. Charlton made chairs with metal mounts (my ex-wife had one; it's still the best Eames replica I've sat in) and also with wooden mounts, but the wooden mounts I've seen on Charlton chairs look different from yours. The photos below show a Charlton chair with wooden mounts; see what I mean?
I'm no expert, though, and Charlton did make a number of variations, so yours may indeed be a Charlton anyway. Have you looked closely at the frame and underside of your chair, and under its upholstery, to see whether you can find a manufacturer's name?
If your chair is a Charlton in good shape, I'd expect it to sell with the ottoman for around $400-$600.
Yeah, I saw that one! I just...
Yeah, I saw that one! I just looked it up again (see link). The guy paid $17,500 (!), and the appraisal ended up being for $500. They broke it to him as gently as possible, but...ouch.
