is there any possible way we could stop talking about the bloody eames lounge/ottoman? I happen to own a beautiful one in Pallisander, but now i refuse to sit in it out of protest. I'm so bloody sick of reading about it, discussing it, and looking at it in every glossy homemaker magazine. and now people are asking about the bloody foam and the direction of the grain...arrrghhh!

Real or Fake?
You seem to resent the proclaimed "king of all lounge chairs", is yours HM/Vitra or "other". Every hobby/lifestyle needs a peak and with modern furniture it's the 670/671.

mines the HM
It's really beautiful but enough already. Yes, it is the most comfortable chair ever made (although I must admit, I do love my Pierre paulin Tulip for comfort too).

Yes, please make it...
Yes, please make it stop!
'Every hobby/lifestyle needs a peak and with modern furniture it's the 670/671'
That is exactly the reason why this needs to stop! I simply don't understand what happened in Charles head when he came up with the design of the Lounge chair. I think it is one of the most horrendous fugly designs ever made. It has absolutely no grace or sense of style whatsoever. Sure it is comfortable, but I think the 670/671 obsession is about status more than good design. It is the Porsche Cayenne of chairs in my world.
Sorry to all 670/671 addicts...

whoops sorry!
sorry to ask about the foam, i did have a reason honestly, i am not completely anal, so if you can help please do-see my post.
why do i like it , as a child in the UK i must have seen it in a magazine, probably something about the space race in the USA. I have always thought of it as a nice place to relax for some comfotable joe who probably said "Hi honey, I'am home" when he arrived at the door.
Its more of a comfort zone for me that an accent chair. My current ones a rosewood circa 59/60 but the leather is really going now.

Why the heck don't read up on the Eames' importance in post WWII US design??
I chose not to buy this lounge chair because it's such an ultimate iconic item. As my showcase lounge chair, I chose to go after a Saarinen Grasshopper chair.
There's no denying the importance of the design of this chair and ottoman. Eames and Herman Miller were very smart to release the film of its easy construction and also their clever advertising campaign.
Besides Eames' wonderful DCW and LCW chairs, this is Eames most iconic production.
Every bit of publicity and acknowledgement the Eames' received during their careers, and even afterward, is honest and fair....they were among the giants of clever and beautiful design...using post war materials like plywoood and vaneers.
I chose not to buy one for my large living room, but I don't understand why people here are bitching about this chair and ottoman....I just don't get it.

New
A lot of people who are new to this forum may start out with only the knowledge of Eames' furniture. The Eames' are a Mid-century Modern starting point, at least it was for me. It's easy to get annoyed by questions if you already know the answer and we all have had those questions at some point. I don't think twice about spreading the wealth when it comes to info I know. It's not the best idea to start a post like this, you can scare away new Design Addicts from posting or just kill their spirit. Amen 6:70 6:71.

James, are you suggesting that you consider Eames only a "starting point"? Does that mean that after one gets properly knowledgable, the person would move "beyond" Eames and Herman Miller?
If so, I couldn't disagree more

"Starting point"
may simply mean entree - the thing that brings one to the table. It doesn't have to mean something derogatory. . .

Starting point
As a starting point I meant the Eames' furniture would spark interest(Even now more being on TV all the time)into the hobby. I mean't nothing bad towards eames', they are my favorite designers and our apartment will show this. Entry point sounds good. Thanks LRF & SDR for helping clarify. We just had a topic about having a lot of members and not enough posts, I just don't want to discourage new people. And YES everyone is entitled to their own opinion! 😉

I agree Eames, was one of the starting points for my interest in modern design together with some of the scandinavian designers and even though I get bored by it sometimes I still rate many of the Eames's designs very high.
The best designs of Eames in my opinion:
-The fiberglass chairs in it's various incarnations, rocker, eiffel and my favorite the LAR, 'Cat's Cradle'
-The ESU storage units (still want one)
-The molded plywood series
The lounge chair is not one of my favorites. I just don't get that chair (!) But you are right James, we shouldn't discourage people from joining by dissing their taste...

So Stephen, you own a Palisander one. Great. I'm envious. If you're so sick of it, why don't you give it to me. I'd be happy to take it off of your hands.
I'm willing to bet when you were thinking about buying it you were obsessing about it much like myself. I'm only asking about the direction of the grain because I want to buy a legit chair. If I were to tell you that the Palisander one you own is not legit, you'd probably freak out.

point taken
Point taken econo, and yes I still rub myself up against that baby at night. But like I said, my Pierre Paulin tulip is actually more comfy. I got it in this lovely burnt orange fabric.
By the way, when i interviewed the grandson, Eames demetrius last year, he reckons his fave eames design are the airport lounges.
