Motive
Boredom and complacency in the marketplace is the main motivation. Both clients and dealers need an alternative to the mainstream, and Mid Century design is now the default setting.
Interior designers require variety, therefore as a retailer, a variation on a theme is a good alternative within the limitations of the vintage market.
I don't see it as crime against design, simply an alternative suggestion.
Thanks, Alan.

Alan Fears started a new thread about this in which he confirmed that he was the seller of the painted thing above and in which he linked to another ebay listing of a rosewood sideboard in original condition. He said something like "Is this better? More simple...minded?" But now the thread is gone. Hope this clears up any confusion.
Fair enough, Alan.
Personally, I don't take issue with it. To each his own. If your clients are buying the stuff, good for you.
If you were altering unique pieces, I might have a different opinion.
Thanks again. Though I'm not feeling particuarly well educated now, your footwork around profit as motive did not go unappreciated.
Oh, and thanks to you, too, spanky. I completely missed that!
The end please
I feel my moment of anger has started a negative thread. I agree a little paint on a generic piece or beyond damage piece can look good. but this last link below well one word responses underneath would be appreciated.
