recently purchased this hand woven textile wall hanging, has some damage from storage having been folded for a long time. I would like to find out if its worth investing in a professional restoration of the damaged parts. Is any one familiar with this work? the photos i have posted show that particular care has been taken with the coloring of the background structure of the weave. Looks to me like 1970's but could be earlier.

What kind of damage? Are there stains? Dry rot? I can't tell from your photos.

damage
Hi spanky, the damage has occurred where the hanging has been folded causing tears along the backing. ( sorry my knowledge of textiles is abysmal so don't know terms .)

I am still not sure what you ...
I am still not sure what you are talking about, but the piece doesn't look to me like it's unique or especially valuable. If you like it and want to hang it in your own house, why not get some estimates on repairing whatever is wrong with it?
If you're wondering if the resale value would make it worth restoring, my guess is no, unless restoration is as simple as relining the back. But it doesn't look like it has a lining---looks more like a coating on the back. A lot of loosely woven upholstery/drapery fabrics are coated on the back to make them more stable.

maybe i got carried away when i found this in a store that closed in 1980 that had been trading since 1969. The store specialised in Scandinavian and Jack Lenor Larsen textiles, and as i'm U.K. based and said Jack is one of your guys I had never heard of, I was hoping for Lenor Larsen fans to confirm my hopes or pour derision on my naivety. I wait with eagerness. And thank you for your interest.

I wonder
what makes you sure this is handwoven ? We don't see an image of the whole piece, just details -- but the very regular stripes make me think it could be a production piece. Of course, if a weaver tells us that the texture indicates handwork, then I'll relent. At the very least, the cut loop pile might have required hand work off the loom. . .?
